What is this?

OK - I'm puzzled. What the heck is this thing, and do I need it? I would love to free up some real estate under the hood, but have no idea what this is.

Any ideas?

Hmmm. Maybe! It does have the trailer brake console under the steering wheel. Must be part of that. Thanks!

That's a mouse trap!!! It allows you to park you truck in the woods while hunting or camping and not get your wiring all chewed up...LOL

My truck had one of those and it did have trailer brakes, not sure if that was what it goes to. I removed it and a bought 10 lbs. of extra wire with no problem.

Radio interference thingamabob? Doesn't look to be used anymore in this pic(2 wires in same post-no third), is there a cut wire as well to trace?

It is a variable resistor used with early brake controllers. Sometimes even in pairs. They helped tune the brakes to some extent, but nothing like today's controllers. Is the trailer controller plumbed into the brake system as well? As was pointed out it has been apparently bypassed and is now little more than a junction block.

Yep.......It's definitely a resister. They were used on a many different types of DC voltage equipment. I have them on older electric palletjacks etc.
Replaced by electric controllers.

I found the same component mounted on my firewall by a PO. It was part of a Kelsey Hayes No. 81739 brake system of unknown vintage. I removed the entire system.

OK - crawled underneath today and found it was wired back to the connector for the trailer. Pulled the wire back to the "hot Dog cooker/mouse trap".

Traced the other wire back to the contriller on the dash. Found that the controller runs back to the the brake resevoir.

So it looks like it'll all come out pretty easily. Question though - if I remove the plumbing to the resevoir (and cap off the port), am I good to go? This won't affect the regular brakes - right?

You should be able to cap that no prob and use your brakes. If you get an air buble in the line... you might have to bleed the brakes.

Love the "wire nuts" on there. When I bought my 1972 GMC the PO had used solid core Romex wire and wire nuts to run the electric choke on the carb.

That looks just like the one in mine, You should be able to remove that brass fitting and the brake line should go right into the MC. I would bleed the system.

Ahh - I didn't even notice the fitting was no longer needed once I take that off! I'll get that out of there when I get to my brakes.

Trying to sort out all the wiring. I've clipped back all the "extra" from the electric brakes. Now I'm just looking to see what is used and what is not used. What a mess!

Thanks for your help guys - look for more questions!

BTW - I have a flux capacitor/hot dog cooker/mouse trap for sale - let me know if you need one! They are very rare! :-)
