Side gas tank using original filler?
I to would like to remove tank from the cab, but I do not want to loose my spare tire. I already have saddle tanks, but do not like the doors to get to the cap. Has anybody used the original fuel filler on the cab and route it to the saddle tank. Do you think this is possible or should I replace the door with something from a newer truck. Pic 1 is my truck with the door I want to get rid of. Pic 2 is a pic I got from the board showing newer door.

Re: Side gas tank using original filler?
I have a 1968 camper special cab that has a filler on the passenger side just like the normal drivers side one. The tube goes down the inside of the rear post and out the back of the cab and hooked to the saddle tank on that side. make template out of brake line and take it to a good exhaust shop and they can bend up a filler pipe to match it!

Re: Side gas tank using original filler?
Why would you want to run a fuel filler through the cab? My IH pickup has that exact setup. The fuel filler runs through the cab to a saddle tank under the cab and bed on one side. The other side just has a fuel cap in the lower front fender with a fill pipe extending down to a saddle tank. If you want clean up the saddle tank fillers then restyle the doors or convert to wheel well fillers as many of these tanks had. Or for an OEM look you could try to duplicate the factory aux. tank filler tube and cover.

Re: Side gas tank using original filler?
My bed has a regular filler tube and cap like the one on the cab, it fills the saddle tank on the driver side..
On the passenger side I have a key locked door similar to the one you have that allows access to the saddle tank on that side. J.

Re: Side gas tank using original filler?
Hard to tell for sure from this picture but it sounds exactly like the NL2 Auxiliary Fuel Tank. It is a driver side mounted 19 gal. tank. The other, pass. side, sounds like an aftermarket tank.

Re: Side gas tank using original filler?
I've seen some saddle tanks with a fuel filler kinda hidden behind the bedside - poking out just flush at the forward edge of the wheelwell in front of the tire. I too like the stock filler and don't like the saddle tank doors, but I'm not sure I'd want to run it thru the cab either since the whole point is to get the tank out of the cab - i.e. safety aside, you'd still get pretty bad fumes in the cab.

The passenger side has the key opened door, but the tank is exactly the same.. just a mirrored version. J.

Re: Side gas tank using original filler?
Here you go, this is how my aux. fuel tank is mounted. Works great, holds 16.0 gallons.

Re: Side gas tank using original filler?
If you really want to be slick you could install the wheel well fillers and use a crossover pipe. These were sorta popular during the "gas war" days. They are standard fillers with a Y tap (right at the top) and a pipe running over to the other tank. You simply stuck the nozzle into either opening to fill either tank from one side or the other.
