How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

Im going to be swapping the engine and suspension on my 66.I plan on renting a engine lift.So i will need to keep my 305 v8 and trans stored on the ground for a few days or weeks while im doing the crossmember swap.I have seen people put them on old tires and even wood pallets.I can get some pallets for free at my job. What do you guys recomend?

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

I use a cradle I got from HF. I slightly modified the rear attachment points so I could leave the trans attached.

2x4's, 4x4's, plywood stacked and cut out to fit tight to the oil pan.
I usually have so much stuff around, I just find what fits.
A spade bit can recess a 5/8 piece of plywood if your drain plug makes it tippy.
Or a chunk of foam board insulation in with the above ideas will keep it dent free.

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

I have two engines sitting in my shop on some $10 harbor freight 1000lb furniture dollies. Cut some 2x4s to stabilize them on the dollies and they are easy to roll around the shop. I have a engine stand too, but I save that for something I'm actually working on at the time.

I use old tires. Works great and it's free.

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

Could you put it in the bed of the truck?

Personally, I'd separate the two, cradle the engine
in a tire and put the trany in a leak-proof pan.
(Many lumber yards carry the big, heavy duty pans
for mixing grout).

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

Thanks for all the info.I could put it in the bed but im doing this in a little two car garage with half of it being the laundry room.My main concern was damaging the oil or trans pan.How many tires would you guys use to keep the engine and trans off the floor?

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

I have an engine stand, if the engine is by itself. If I have it as an accessories-on longblock or an engine trans combo, I use a 1200lb furniture dolly. They hold the engine trans combos great, while not putting weight on the oil or tranny pans themselves. Plus they move and are low pro if you need to slide something under a car on stands. Pretty good use of $40

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

I have a couple sitting on tires and I have a Caddy 500 on an inexpensive (but the heavier duty one) engine stand from HF. Its been on there for a few years and shows no sign of hitting the ground lol.

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

Just let it hang on the cherry picker. It may even rest on the legs of the cherry picker with the tranny attached. I have one you can borrow if you need one.

Re: How are you guys keeping engines off the floor?

I've got two on tires, ones been there for almost a year and nothing has happened to it. We did have them on pallets at one point and they were fine there too
