'62 troubles

I have two problems that I need help with. I own a '62 C10 short wide, my first question is, some time ago I purchased a heavy duty headlight wire harness so that I could use Halogen sealed beam headlights. When using this harness I have no low beam lights, after switching back to the original harness my low beams came back. Will using an OE harness with the halogen lights burn up the harness? Second, I have a 700 R4 transmission to replace my Turbo 350 and it is completely electronic, I am told that I can purchase a wiring harness to by-pass the torque converter, where can I get one? I also need a mechanical speedometer drive for this same transmission. Any help would be appreciated very much.

Re: '62 troubles

It sounds like there is an issue with the new harness. I have been running halogen headlights with factory harnesses without a problem. However it is advisable and quite easy to add a couple relays to the headlight circuit. Then ther is no longer an issue with too much amperage in the factory headlight wiring. There is a link to a writeup on doing this, in the 60-66 FAQ's at the top of the '60-'66 main page.

The 700R4's are not electronically controlled. They are controlled with the TV cable. Some guys call it a kickdown cable, it is not. They do have a electric torque converter lock up, and some do have electronis speedo drives. One of the most important things on a 700R4 is the correct setup of the TV cable. If this is not setup correctly, you will burn up the trans in a short time. The torque converter lockup is also very important. Do not run the trans without it operating. I would suggest doing a search in the 'Engine and Drivetrain' section of the forum. The 700R4's have been discussed many, many, many times over there. Member clinebarger is our forum transmission expert. If you just can't find an answer to your questions, post a thread over there, and someone will help you find what you need
