Trans question?
Want to replace my 216 with 250 or 292 I6. If I use the 250 from a 70 c10 with a 3 speed what transmission options do I have if I want to keep mine a four speed? What trans should I be looking for?

Re: Trans question?
My 48 has a 250 (beyond worn out) with a truck bellhousing and full syncro 3 speed out of a mid 70's truck. I have a Nova rear axle behind that.
If you want to run the stock 4 speed you can get a mid 50's to 60 something cast iron bellhousing that has the mounts for the crossmember under the bellhousing and bolt it in. A later full syncro four speed out of 70 something pickup would be more enjoyable to use though. As MKnittle so aptly said above, it all depends on how you want to use the truck. If it is mostly cruise night and road trips to rod trots I'd put a full syncro three speed in it but if you intend to haul with it or tow with it the four speed might be a better option. The truck four speeds and S-10 five speeds also get the shifter up away from the bench seat so it's more comfortable for three people to ride in the truck. |

Re: Trans question?
I'm not married to using my stock trans...I just was looking at a 250 out of a '70 C10 but it has three in the tree and I prefer to keep the floor shift. I just am not sure what trans would fit in my 53 well and will work well behind the 250 straight 6 without a lot of mods.
I just want a strong reliable truck to DRIVE...no plans on really hauling anything or drag racing or anything like that. |
