tonight me and my father had a huge discussion about me going off to college and all the finances that go along with it and he told me that if i moved closer to school i could keep the truck but if i stayed at home i would have to buy a more economical vehicle because i only get 8 to the gallon and would be filling the truck 3 times a week. the part i hated to hear was the possibility of selling the truck and i begged him to get me another vehicle and then just hold my truck at home until i get out of school and use it as a work truck from time to time but no he hates it and wants it to go if i get another vehicle, then he proceeded to tell me that even thoug i would make the down payment on the new car and make the monthly payments i would not have a choice in what i got. so it all boils me down to selling the truck and getting something that i dont want, i am against it 100 percent but have no say in any of it. I was thinking 2000 for the truck what do you guys think

It's the same old story, and I hate to hear it every time. I went through it too and sold my first truck that my dad and I built together. If you have to sell it, I might be interested, maybe even work out a trade for my gas friendly truck. My vote would be for moving closer to school if you can afford it. Filling up three times a week isn't that bad. I drive so much that I fill up every other day and that's in a Nissan truck that gets 20+ mpg. However, I must say that your education is a little more important than any truck/car you own. You'll be better off in the end once you get the education and can afford any car or truck you want with that well paying job.

I say keep the truck and live at home while giong to college. You can try it the first year, then see if your decisions are what you want to do. I know living at home while at college will suck, but maybe you will find a new friend or a Fraternity to join that will allow you to keep your truck and live close to campus realatively cheep. Good luck and have fun in College. You will never regret the decision of attending college and graduation. Hope this helps.

I made the mistake of putting my first car, a 68 Camaro, in front of school.

It cost me a few years.

There will always be other trucks in the future.

This is the very reason I had to give up my first car, a 67 Mustang. I ended up with an 87 Ranger. I did not know it at the time but my parents were right. I ended up quitting college but I did make it big in real estate. Now I have my 71 GMC that I can do the 15K plus frame off on. I also have a 2002 Tundra Limited, a 2003 Mustang GT vert, a 1970 VW bug (I bought from Dean on this board) and a 2000 Honda Valkyrie Tourer motorcycle.

Take your fathers advice and let it motivate you and maybe 5-10 years from now you could have 10 trucks if you want them.

Sell the truck. Go to school. Get a diploma. Get a good job. Buy twice the truck to start with when you are done.

The last time I checked, about 5 years ago, college grads were coming in here for $50k+/year. You can buy a heck of a nice truck on that salary. Thats $25+/hour for the math challenged out there.

I'll never forget running into a guy from my high school hockey team at a bar 2-3 years into college. My older brother was with and we were both working $5-$6/hour jobs to pay our way through school. The guy couldn't figure out why we were busting our butts to go to school when he was already making $8/hour picking up garbage.

I bet he is still picking up garbage. I know I'm not.

Interesting that this post came up now. When I got home from work last night there was a note on my door. It was from a guy that sold me his car when he went off to college in 1996. he wanted to know if I still had it and would sell it back. He will be picking it up in the next week or 2.

Here is another idea. Convert the truck to an AOD and put lower gears in it. It will improve your gas mileage make the truck even more fun to drive.

A couple of things come to mind. I speak as a father with children in, or recently left college.
If you move closer to college you will have to pay living expenses which will cost much more than living at home and using your truck.
College is always a good idea, I teach at one.
I went to college in order to move away from home.
After two years of college my son elected to join the Army. He serves for three years, contributes $1000 from his pay which the Army makes up to $36000 to finish college. I would have been happy to pay, but accept that he will get things from the Army that he wouldn't get from college.

I think the best thing a kid can do is move away from Mom and Dad. Even it is for a short period of time. Sell the truck, go to school. That old truck seems very important to you now, but in a few years you may have found interest in a completely new hobby.

Don't strap yourself down to big payments while in college. It will take a lot of fun out the whole process.

Sell the truck, go to school. Get out of the house and get some good roomates. I started college without a pot to poo in, 5 years later I'm working on my masters degree and doing well for myself. You gotta set yourself up for sucess. There are tons of these trucks out there and its way more fun to buy and work on trucks when you got a little green to spend.

go to college, it was the smartest thing I ever did. You might get lucky like me and meet someone who knows where the truck you have always been looking for is and at a great price.

Get an education. The General built a lot of these trucks. You may not get the exact one you had in high school, but you may get the one you dreamed your truck would become. I don't think selling your truck should really be the deciding factor. I think everyone should move out of their parents house for college. You develope a lot more as a person, having to fend for yourself, making adult decisions, making mistakes and learning from them. Not to mention the drive from your parents to school is going to get old, especially if you have a morning class, and then you have some study group in the evening...then you're making 2 trips in one day, or you have to waste all day at school.

Hope it works out for you. But college is the best investment you can make.

I went to school at KSU for the last four years, and actually remember seeing your truck in Manhattan.

Sell your truck, go to school. GM built something like 2 million of our trucks, there will always be some on the road somewhere. I just dread the day that there are no more of them for us to play with.

I say try to keep it, but school does come first.

Do you have an HEI on it yet? What tranny/rearend/rear tires are you running? Switching from points to an HEI got me 2MPG (and more power, hehe) to 10MPG, and then upgrading froma TH400 to a 700R4 bumped me up to 14, and that's with me cruising at 80+ with 3.73's and 28" tires - still running right about 3000RPM.

I must say I have to back up Chris (68 Suburban) 100% on this one, school is much more important than your truck. I quit college not because of my car....but because I felt drinking and partying all night was a better option. I make 8 bucks an hour now, working in underground placement (digging holes and placing conduit in the ground.) I haven't had a chance to get back on my feet well enough to get back to school. There are other trucks out there man, do the school thing.
