Grill decal application
Planning on doing the grill decals either this weekend or next for my 63 aluminum grill I polished. Has anybody done the decals before? I looked for a thread but couldn't find one. Any good tips on the plan of attack would be great.

Re: Grill decal application
Did mine a couple of months ago, just make sure surface is clean, I used denatured alcohol to clean it up, have some tweezer's on hand and push out the air bubbles with a rag. It can get tideous, but over all very easy. Decals wont fit the letter on the grill just center it as best as possible hope that helps.

Re: Grill decal application
1963c-10,
Where did you get the Chevrolet decals from? LMC and a few others I checked carry 1964-1966 decals. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cbe/full.aspx?Page=39 I thought of painting mine. Just strategically taping around the letters and paint it. Not sure if I wanna go with black. I also thought about using Chevrolet Hood Letters on top of the grill letters. Maybe spray them with a gold tint or leaving them chrome. http://www.duplicolor.com/ Give it the raised letter look. https://www.google.com/search?q=chev...w=1024&bih=649

Re: Grill decal application
Spray glass cleaner on the grill and back side of the decal before you try to apply the letters. That will let you slide the letters into place without the adhesive sticking firm. Then dab the letters with a rag to squeeze the excess cleaner from behind the letters and set them in place. The cleaner also lets any air bubbles escape easier.

Re: Grill decal application
I got mine from Classic Parts of America. They were $4.95 and came in two colors. Thanks for all the input on the install. I will take pics as I go along to add to this thread.

Re: Grill decal application
No, the 63-66 were the same. Let me check my lists, I talked w/a guy on the Stovebolt site who was making the 62 design.

Re: Grill decal application
I'm guessing astronaut is talking about water transfer decals. I could be wrong, but the glass cleaner trick probably would not work with adhesive backed vinyl stickers.

Re: Grill decal application
I have used the glass cleaner to install vinyl stickers on my truck glass. I just hadn't done the grill yet and was hoping for some tips on it.

He then sent me the '64-'66 letters - closer but still not quite right. I installed them and took some pictures so he could see where they fit and didn't. I finally received a set that are pretty good. It seems the '63 grille lettering was different from the '64 - '66. Contact him if you want a set. He will make sure you get the correct ones. Greg.

Re: Grill decal application
I need to try the glass cleaner trick, I have a bottle of the Slide-On Gel, but it's really thick and goopy to work with the smaller decals.

Re: Grill decal application
I put those little stickers on years ago. I didn't do anything special. It took like five minutes. They're pretty small, so I didn't have any air bubbles or anything like that. They've just been there looking like they came that way forever. No big deal--just stick 'em on there. And I guess if you do mess them up somehow, at least they're cheap.

Re: Grill decal application
I used water w/a drop or two of dish soap, like window tinters use. It allows you to slide them around to position perfectly. One the water dries, they are stuck.

Re: Grill decal application
Thanks for all the replies....so either dish soap & water or window cleaner. Heck, maybe Ill try both and see which one is easier. Id think the window cleaner would have a faster dry time with the ammonia in it.

Re: Grill decal application
In my job I prep new fleet vehicles for service with decals also. This best thing to use is a soapy water in a spray bottle. You spray the vehicle surface and apply the decal on top. The soapy water allows you to move the decal with out destroying it. You can use a cheap bondo spreader or a (gold) color spreader specifically used for 3 M decals that wont rub scratches on the decal. Whith the spreader, squeze the water and bubbles out and let stand for a while. Its simple but takes practice...

Avoid ammonia,at all cost it could attack the glue

Re: Grill decal application
I have done decal applications on my Ole' 2004 40th Anniversary Mustang GT that I was making a BOSS out of.
I lost alot of photos of her before I traded her in. Had them on thumb drive. GT/Boss thing. Kinda half and half thing. Got all of them from Graphic Express. http://www.graphic-express.com/01_fo...g_listings.asp This is all I put on her: GT Scoop Designation decal Fade Scoop - Blackout decal Scoop blackout decal Boss Style Fader Hood decal - Missing from photos below. Boss Side Body Stripe decal - Missing from photos below. I cut this to incorporate with the Boss Style Fader Hood decal Stripe set with no designation cowl Hood Stripe - Missing from photos below. I cut some of it to work with the Boss Style Fader Hood decal. Rear Bumper Accent - Missing from photos below. Mustang Rear Vent Top Accent. Rear Bumper Lower Accent. - Missing from photos below. Rear Behind Tag Accent - Missing from photos below. Mustang Rear Bumper Letters Fuel Door Decal - Missing from photos below. Mustang Wing Accent - Missing from photos below. Side Vent Accent - Missing from photos below. Trunk Pinstripe - Missing from photos below. 40th Anniversary Lower Rocker Side Stripe. YMR Official Decal - YELLOW. Yellow Mustang Mirror decal - YELLOW. I was a member of the Yellow Mustang Registry Club. http://www.yellowmustangregistry.com/desktop/ I know what you are thinking... Dang 1Bad, you had a crap load of money tied up in that car... Yep.. That was just in the decals not counting the rest of the car! Why??? Young and dumb, Muscle Car/Gear Head in my blood, and (WOMEN!) I miss her alot....But man I had some fun in that car! I did it all myself and I had to learn patience very quickly! ( Installation Tips ): http://www.graphic-express.com/x-ins...nvironment.asp The decals on the grill would be an easy project in my opinion. If you lived a little closer Bud I would do it for you for free.
