Sm465 shifter???

This is a strange problem. I have 3 sm465's and one has the old painted shifter and the other has the chrome stick. The chrome stick feels tighter and its lower welds are still nice. These two look identical out of the truck. However when I put the chrome shorter in the trans it hits the dash in 1st and 3rd. The old painted stick does not.

What gives? Is there a difference in these shifters? The bends and all look the same. The chrome stick was working in a 83 k10 and my truck is a 77 k10.

Any input would be helpful

Re: Sm465 shifter???

could it be the ball on the bottom of the shifter? meaning is it worn out?

Re: Sm465 shifter???

Someone bent and painted the other one. Is it lifted? Is the transfercase dropped? Body lift?

Re: Sm465 shifter???

No body lift
Has new cab mounts.
T case is not lowered.

Thinking maybe this chrome shifter is not seating all the way down. Pops was thinking the old black shifter is so shot that it just drops in while the tighter chrome onew needs some perswasion to seat. I will play with it tomorrow and report back

Re: Sm465 shifter???

I would agree that something is probably worn out in that situation. The SM465 that was in my '76 would come real close to hitting the dash in first gear, and that trans was all original.

Re: Sm465 shifter???

I have both, and the chrome shifter is a little tough to get in It took some messing around, but my painted shifter just fell into place.
