90s into 71 GMC A/C unit

like title says i have a 1995 or 96 a/c truck but i want to know if the a/c unit will work in my 71 gmc non ac i just want to know if anybody has done it i understand that i would have to rework the vents but im getting the unit for free and anything else i need since i have the truck i bagged my truck so i was going to put stock in but know it wont work since its bagged and 22s thanks

Seriously, if you want air.....you'd be better off with an aftermarket unit. I have a '69 and I also have a '96. I see nothing about the '88-98 unit that would fit without a buttload of hassle, when you are talking about the earlier (67-72) cabs. Just not much room at all. Now, if you stretch the cab about 6 inches...between the windshield and the back glass, you can add some depth to the dash and create some room for whatever you might want.

member Ackattack did it in his no buck truck, here is a link where there are some pics of the mods required. I would not recommend it and neither does Ack. He had to section the diverter box and cut the diverter blades down and plastic weld the whole box back togerther to make it fit behind the dash, also cut and patch a section of firewall from the 90's truck and weld it into the old truck. The 90's unit is so large that if you can make it fit you will loose the space where you radio and ash tray go. The whole AC box is wide enough that it will almost interfere with the steering column. It can be done BUT you had better have a lot of patience and skill that being said It would be better to go aftermarket. Personally I think I have some good skill but I wouldn't touch that mod. Good luck in what ever you do, If you want to go low budget I would suggest finding a year appropriate stock system although you would still have to change the firwall to match the AC system if it was originally a heat only truck. Good luck in what ever you decide but I think once you see the monster that the 90's AC is you will change your mind.

I put on in a 65 truck and do not recomend trying it. The fab work is extremly difficult and the firewall has to be seriously modified as well as the dash. An aftermarket system would be much better.
