PS Pulley issue
So I setup my powersteering pump and here the pulley is atleast a 1/2" to far out. Im thinking the Pump is from a 69 c-10 which had a long water pump.... and Im running a short water pump. Am I right in thinking this? So My thought is that I need a pump from a 67 or 68 that had a short water pump? Thoughts, help and knowledge are much appreciated as always.

To my knowledge, all '67-'72 trucks used a short water pump setup. Cars changed over in '69 IIRC. Are you 100% sure that is an original '69 truck PS pump? I haven't seen one with a neck that long before. I have a few pumps from even the mid 80's that don't have a neck that long. I was fairly sure that most all Chevy pumps were the same size, it was the brackets that offset the pump to be either a long or short configuration.
I would try looking for a different pump. BTW, the pump itself can be changed out of the housing, if you like the housing you have ("stovepipe style"). Edit, looking at the picture of mine (which came from my original '68 C10) it does look to be the same. The bracket was for a short pump setup but when I put it on my '65 which had a long water pump, I had to space it out. Here's a pic,

chevy_mike is correct. The trucks all used the short water pumps thru '72 and the cars thru '68. On the short water pump small blocks the power steering pump belt went on the 3rd pulley groove out on the crank. So it appears you will need another pulley on your crank. I also see what appears to be an aftermarket power steering pump bracket, which may or may not add to any misalignment issues. I have not used an aftermarket PS bracket just the OEM brackets, so I do not have any specific experiences with those. I'm just going on the overall quality of a lot of aftermarket parts which typically are imports.

With a 3 groove pulley the PS pulley would line up in between them. The PS bracket is actually really nice. Made from a company in Tx. It just cleans it up a tad. I just called them and they said that with there bracket you have to run a two groove PS pulley and that the belt goes to the back groove.
Id love to see some factory short water pump pics though....

Im also thinking part of my problem may be in that my crank pulley is a deep groove pulley.

Yes, there are different crank pulleys for different pump setups so you likely have the wrong one for your combo. Pulleys and brackets can be one of the most frustrating things unless you get a complete setup from a known combo (short/long, stock/aftermarket).

You could also shim the pump out to line up with a 3rd pulley. But like you said, possibly a stock stamped steel pulley set will work.

Ok....
So ive been on this researching it out like white on bread! (or rice). In the mid 60's-68 Cars and most trucks had a single groove crank pulley. A Factory 3 groove pulley would work fine. The outside groove was for the Power steering. The thing I didnt like about this was that you would have the middle groove pulley that wouldnt be used. From what Ive read that was used for cars that had smog pumps. So cars that DIDNT have a smog pump or option of one used a crank pulley extension. Part # 3751232 It will work with a one groove or a two groove crank pulley. I just want it as clean and as simple as possible. Im still going to be on the hunt for the deep groove pulleys.... just will take some time to dig them up.

That is correct. You can use just a single groove pulley next to the balancer, then just add the deeper pulley to that to drive the PS pump. If I remember correctly the 2nd groove was also used for A/C. I believe the '68 Z28 had deep groove pulleys, which would have had the short water pump.

So I have a similar issue. My 283 (unknown vintage, maybe 65) has a single groove crank pulley. It does not quite line up with the water pump, maybe 1/4 inch off. The water pump pulley is slightly in front of the crank pulley. Not sure if its a long or short pump either. I could add a single washer, maybe two, to shim it out and it would be close. But I have also added power steering and need a two groove crank pulley. It sure looks like this would be the one. Any insight would be appreciated.

With the correct short water pump and correct pulley, it will line up with the crank pulley closest to the balancer. As I stated above, the power steering pump pulley lines up with the 3rd groove out on the crank. That is as long as you are running the correct short water pump. All trucks '55-'72 came with short water pumps from the factory.

Easiest way to accomplish this is use the correct pump bracket, correct alternator bracket, the correct short water pump, a single flush crank pulley with a double pulley bolted onto that.

If you don't have AC you only need these 2 bottom pulleys.In all trucks from 1960-73 with the 283--400 they use the 2 bottom pulleys that i will show you

I have the stock alternator bracket which goes on the DS. If you relocate the alternator to the passenger side, chances are your harness will not reach the alternator without splicing in longer wires.

I understand. My issue is that I have a later exhaust manifold (non rams head) so do not have bosses for bracketry. I also want to upgrade to later internally regulated alternator so have some rewiring to do anyway. Plus a previous owner (insert your favorite derogatory term here) had left much of the under hood wiring in a mess. I am gonna try this and if it is not a good option then a Saturday morning trip to my favorite bone yard will be forthcoming. Thanks for the advice.

64’ C20 with PS, AC, PB, this application has AC. However, the pump and pulley should be same.
As non-AC. The last four numbers on pulley are ...1943 if remembering correctly. The photos show belt alignment, as Captain stated above, lines up with third pulley from balancer. Starting to get it running. Last edited by aotte1; 05-03-2018 at 01:06 AM. |

Great pictures. I think this helps a lot. I did order this bracket from Speedway that locates the alternator just above and to the passenger side of the water pump. I think its gonna work real well. I also picked up the 3rd groove pulley from them but its is not aligning with my ps pump so need to look at pulley options for it. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Small...ain,38957.html

Les, your PS belt is actually riding in the 4th groove out. There is not always a pulley in the 2nd groove spot. It also appears that your PS pump pulley is slightly different than a typical PS pulley for a short water pump application. It is likely due to your truck being a AC truck.
