Pulley alignment advice needed

I have the correct pullies for my 72 w/350 but the alternator/WP/Crank belt is off. I have a new water pump that measures 5 3/4" from the flange to the machine surface of the block. I have read that it should be 5 5/8". I could be closer to alignment with that 1/8" difference! Do you think it is possible to drive that W/P flange a little futher down on the shaft? That would be with
removing the back cover and positioning the end of the shaft on something solid like an anvil and maybe use a socket against the flange when I hit it with a hammer. Crazy?

If it is a press fit you should be able to move it if you back it up on a anvil. So the water pump doesn't line up with the crank?

Yes, the water pump pulley does not line up with the crank.
The alternator does line up with the crank.

Bob, I am dealing with the exact same issue.

I purchased a project truck with no engine or pulleys. I had a power steering bracket and pump. And the truck came with the alternator bracket and short water pump. So i found a matched set of crank/waterpump pullies from a board member.
I installed everything today and found the same problem as you did. Everything lines up with the crank pulley except for the water pump pulley. I found my water pump measure 5.75" from mounting to hub face, same problem as yours.

I plan to see if i can press the hub on to the 5 5/8" measurement.

Any chance you could share the part number on your power steering pump pulley?

Sure, my PS pulley has the number 3993325DJ.

NO, the pulley needs to back about 3/32", at least that is the case on mine and thats how i read the original post also.

I did move the flange in about an 1/8". Its a lot closer to alignment now.
I think I will push it a little closer. Don't have very much more room as the pulley will hit the pump.

Bob, is the pulley flange moving easily? Are you doing it in a press or just a socket and hammer?

Mine has plenty of room for the pulley to back.

I'm using my vise. When I took the back cover off, the end of the shaft
protruded just enough outside of the housing so I could set it on the back vise jaw.
I used a socket on the flange end. I had marked it so I could see any movement.
I cranked down on the vise pretty hard for it to move. Overall it
went very well. This is a new water pump but the box says made in china.
It looks pretty good but I don't know how it compares to the original.
