New project "time capsule"

Good morning all. New to this site and after seeing all of the great info, decided to join... This is my latest find 1967 Chevy SWB. It's a one owner job that has been sitting next to a barn under an awning in SC. since 1986.. It was parked due to clutch slippage and forgotten ever since (out of site, out of mind). It had one repaint in the early 80's (as a fathersday present) and short of under the battery on the inner fender, I cant see any rust.
I've decided to go with an autocross theme (performance handling) as I've done everything else with all of the previous 67-72's I've owned over the last 25 years. Looking at either an lt-1 or ls 6.0. I guess I'll get it home first.. Thoughts??
I want to apologize in advance for spelling, my dumb questions.. etc. Not sure how to upload pics.. First time on any computer site. (computer illiterate) Would really like to get some pics up !! Thanks to all in advance for your help.

Sweet find! Welcome from a fellow North Carolinian. I'm interested in how this build turns out. I like the idea of a autocross theme. I think that would be cool.

Re: New project "time capsule"

The closest thing I've seen is a mid 70's SWB done for the course. I want something of a challenge with this build, but the new FI motors and electronics will be a learning curve for me. I've found a 95 LT1 engine complete minus harness ($500) and a 2006 LS 6.0 with trans (68K miles $1500) Dont really know which way to go yet.

Re: New project "time capsule"

I'm in construction, I travel... everywhere. I was talking cars with a local building inspector here in N. Eastern SC. and and he said his father-in-law (74 and can't drive anymore) has a few old cars and trucks that he needs to get rid of. That was enough for me... We jumped in his truck and hit the country and after looking at a rusty and rough 58 apache, a 72 Caddy and a 65 Barracuda, we came upon this ride..Surrounded by weeds on 3 sides and under a barn canopy. I thought it was a long bed cause you couldn't hardly get around it but sure enought, shorty.
It turns over so I'm sure I can get fire in the holes.. I'm sure the seals or rings havent dried up and stuck in a "i'm done pose". I guess we'll see. I almost want to keep it totally original, but I still like to bang gears and hang on for dear life. I am finding these harder to come by (especially so clean and original) so i'm not sure how much I want to cut this one up... Thanks for the support !!

Re: New project "time capsule"

Noo .. That truck is a gem buddy. Don't cut it up too much for Auto Cross.

.. Pleeease .. A wash job and some fresh tires / wheels and just drive it for a while. That thing has so much potential.

Re: New project "time capsule"

I agree with CC69Rat, clean it up, new tires, fluids, get it running and drive it for a while...the plan for mods may change after its on the road and being driven.

Re: New project "time capsule"

I guess there's lots of ways to look at it. I've built these so many different ways. From original stock as a stove, to full drag, custom, to 4x4. I've even built a 72 SWB rust bucket junker with super comfy plush interior. Just because. I guess I want to do something different with this one. Something that no one has done before. I see lots of trucks on this site that have some very cool mods, I think to myself.. " now that's original " I found an excellent platform to begin with, have average working man funds and decent metal working skills... After building 16 of these trucks over the years, I'd like to keep one for more than a few years. Time to hit the drawing board and scribble out some ideas !! Thanks all.

Re: New project "time capsule"

If you have plans for a "Pro Touring" truck,... look at Porterbuilt Street Rods coilover suspension.

Re: New project "time capsule"

Wow nice find ! I would have to get her running and enjoy it a little if the engine is good. While you gather parts anyway.

I think the PB coilover susp would be great also. Have you checked out robnolimit's build ? this should give you some ideas for the autocross theme.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=488826

For the engine I vote for the 6.0 or any other gen3/4 LS just because the LT1 has some odd ball and expensive ignition parts. That and having such a short production life I would imagine parts will only get more scarce and expensive for the LT1's. Whatever you choose It looks like a great start!

Re: New project "time capsule"

Thanks Dan. After reading what they're palnning, my resolve is stronger than ever. I have a ton of parts left over from my racing years (round and drag) and Ive got most of the parts sitting around from a 500HP 302-mo (1968) build and a BW Super T-10.... Hmmm, Drivetrain figured out... Suspension next..
