71 C20 Full Restore
So here is the build thread for my 1971 C20. The truck is a single cab long bed 350 manual trans 4x4 truck. I paid $400.00 for it and after scrapping the plow and selling the ladder rack I ended up only investing $250.00. My plans are to restore it frame off, over the course of the next few years. I am still in college and working full time, but I love working on trucks and this is the vintage I have been looking for for quite some time. Anyway I will stop talking and give everybody some pics of what I have done so far.
Here is the day I bought the truck... Then I removed and sold the ladder rack.... Then I removed the plow.... I just ordered the exhaust manifolds as the truck currently has one long tube header and one manifold on it, I also plan to order a manifold back exhaust system as well. I also need to fix the brakes because the brake pedal will not automatically return, and there are very little brakes when depressed. I am pretty sure this is a master cylinder issue, after this it will be road worthy. The truck was undercoated so it is pretty solid with the exception of the bed sides which will need to be replaced. Here are some more pics that I have taken as well. I have a lot of work to do but the truck is really solid to start with, no holes in the cab floor, the passenger side still has factory paint. Hopefully this forum will help me with some questions I am sure I will have. Thanks in advance, Robert |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Thanks,
As for the updates I just called Waldron's Exhaust and ordered a system for the truck manifold back, and the stock manifolds are on order as well. The manifolds will be in this week, while the exhaust will take about 4 weeks to be built. While the exhaust is being built I can take some time to investigate the brake problem and repair them. The pedal does not return automatically and there are almost no brakes when the pedal is depressed. I am leaning towards a master cylinder issue and classic performance has a kit with new brake booster, master cylinder and proportioning valve for $300.00. I just need to make sure this is the issue before I proceed with that. My focus after that will be on getting the truck inspected and then getting the body parts it needs (doors and fleet sides) or at least some door skins. I have had a few leads on some parts around here but nothing has followed through. I am hesitant to order the fleet sides through LMC because I have heard they have alignment issues, and that would be a waste of $1200. My only goal for this summer is to get the truck on the road and inspected, then I can move it to my house to work on it and back to our other property to store it. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Exhaust Manifolds came in at work today, I got a pretty good deal on them too because I can purchase parts 10% above cost at the dealership I work at. Ill probably try and throw them on next week. I am thinking because the exhaust shop is going to take so long, that maybe I should order the y pipe and do a single exhaust myself, but I will see what the weather brings.

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
So after a few months of looking I finally found a bed for the truck, It has one small rust spot in the wheel well, but it came from a truck from Alabama so it is pretty solid. Only problem is that they cut the bed floor to get the bed bolts out, which means instead of a nice easy swap I need to take the bedsides off this bed, and put them on the good floor that I already have, not to bad, considering I talked the guy down to $200 for the bed. I also picked up a passenger side door for $50.00 that is in perfect condition, just don't have any pics right now.
Also the tailgate is a little too far gone to do anything with, but I will probably hang on to it and just paint it until I can find an original one in better condition. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Well I just ordered the correct exhaust manifolds for the truck, and also probably going to purchase the system tonight as well. I want to get the hung as soon as possible. I am still waiting for the master cylinder to show up, but the brake pedal return spring is here. After this is done the truck will be able to be driven without blowing out anybodies ear drums or rear ending anyone. Once the truck can make it to my house I can really start to dive in on it. My eventual goal is just a very clean frame off restoration, mostly stock with the exception of the engine. I plan to keep the 4 bolt 350 in it and just build a little more power out of it. I also want to do a 4 inch suspension lift and paint it two tone red and white.
Thinking that this weekend I will probably take some time to put the new bed in primer so it doesn't turn into a rot box while it is waiting on the body work to be done to it. Other than that it I have been just taking it one step at a time and cleaning and tinkering here and there, really doing all the stuff that only requires labor, and not so much of that green stuff that apparently doesn't grow on trees. I will have some more video/pictures when I get the exhaust on and hopefully get it on the road. Thanks again, this forum has already proven to be very helpful. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Alright ordered all the exhaust components the other day, so I went up and took the old "high performance" exhaust off. I also attached some pictures of the manifold bolts, does anybody know which ones are original? they were all different lengths and I know they did not snap off in the block.
I am assuming the longest bolt is original because it was the only one that stayed tight until it was backed out. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Also I am not sure if this is valuable information or not, but when I went to order the new manifolds no parts store could order them. I happened across these http://www.summitracing.com/parts/RNB-674-501/ which are the exact same manifold, just listed only under corvettes, so if you need replacement manifolds and want a good name like Dorman, the part number is 674-501 and any parts store can get them this way. they are universal for either side.

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
So aside from what is happening with the build so far, I was wondering if anybody could answer a question for me. This truck is supposedly a heavy 3/4 ton truck, as listed on the glove box and I can see that the truck has extra helper springs above the main spring pack, but what does the package entail? I have just been curious as to what front and rear end this truck should have, and random specs like that. If you know anything feel free to let me know.
Thanks in advance, -Jr |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
The rest of the exhaust showed up today from LMC, actually seems to be a decent kit. All the pipe is mandrel bent, and the clamps and hangers are actually pretty solid. It was only $229.00 plus shipping. Came with 2 IMCO mufflers? Never heard of them but they are made in the US. If all else fails I can always purchase new mufflers. I will let everyone know how the kit fits after Sunday, that is when I will be hanging it. Then I will just need to get the brake problem fixed, as soon as the MC I ordered over a month ago shows up.

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
I was hoping that by this time I would have a video up of the new exhaust, but like with most projects I undertake such is not the case. I had the whole thing ready to hang and then I realized why there where only 4 bolts holding on the drivers side manifold. The other two had snapped off in the block when the previous owner tried to install the long tube headers. Needles to say my time was spent drilling out the bolts. I still need to take an easy out or left handed drill bit and try to get the outer edge of the bolts out then run a 3/8 16 tap through it, which hopefully I can do tomorrow. Here is how I found was the best way to access the bolts with a right angle drill attachment.

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
So I finally got the new manifolds on today and was just getting ready to hang the exhaust when it started to lightning out. I used some ryobi easy out tools from home depot, and a chisel and hammer to chisel the edge of the broken manifold bolt away from the inside of the head after I drilled it out. This worked but took about 2 hours to get the rear bolt out, the front bolt came out in about a half hour. I found overall this technique worked pretty well, but it is tricky to not break the easy out tool when you are turning the old bolt out, which is why I used the chisel. Anyway I will be sure to post some pics once the whole system is on.

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
So I finally got the exhaust on, and hung by at least one hanger on each side before it got dark. I tried to start the truck but as I was turning it over my brother told me to stop, I had blown a fuel line going to the carb and it was spewing gas over everything under the hood, so I decided I would wait to run it until I get the new line on, and that will give me time to place the rest of the hangers anyway. I have no complaints about the fitment of this exhaust, except there is one spot where the fuel line comes out of the cab floor where it is very close to the intermediate pipe, so I was wondering if anybody knew of some good exhaust header wrap that I could insulate this portion of the exhaust with so I don't go starting any fires.
Thanks again, and oh yeah I got some pics this time. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
So I finally got the exhaust on, and fuel leak fixed. Of course none of the hangers that LMC sent me will work for this truck because the exhaust is to far from the frame, so I have to make identical brackets to those that where on the original single exhaust for the other side, and I bought some oem style hangers. I got a video of the truck running, sounds a little more quiet in person, and I know there is an exhaust leak, it is coming from the drivers side manifold, I just didn't have the right tools with me today to tighten the plugs in it so i will be working on that later.
Sunday, my next day off I plan to finish up any loose ends with the exhaust, and start tearing down the breaks so i can get them fixed. also does anyone know how to post a video that isn't from youtube on here? that would be much appreciated. thanks again, JR Last edited by RHGuyettejr; 08-08-2012 at 01:37 PM. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Nice looking 3/4 ton! Is that a hydraulic pump up on the passenger side of the motor in the accessory drive?

Yeah it had a working plow on it when I bought it, scrapped the blade but I am keeping all the push plates and hydraulics, I just disconnected the drive belt for now.

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
I uploaded the exhaust video to youtube, not bad for a cheap LMC exhaust, it will sound much better once I take care of that leak. Edit* just watched the video and it uploaded without sound for most of it, ugh. I will try to get it fixed. thanks again, JR |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Ok so I finally got the exhaust hung, and the leaky manifolds fixed with some new fel-pro metal gaskets, and not those cheesy ones that come with the manifolds. Here is the new video.
Also if a mod wants to delete those previous posts that make no sense now because there is no video embed feel free. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
So I drove the truck around the other day trying to figure out what is wrong with the brakes, seems to stop alright but pedal goes almost to the floor. Brake pedal is returning now that it is seeing some more use, but slowly. I checked and the return spring is there, so I am guessing the linkages just need some lubrication. I also checked the fluid, rear reservoir was full, front had none. I filled the front, mostly so I could check for leaks, but I haven't bled them yet. I was trying to see if it was seeping out of the proportioning valve because it looked like the seal was gone, however it wasn't leaking there, so I am going to bleed the front brakes and go from there with trying to find a leak, maybe I will get lucky and they just need to be bled, but I doubt that.
I took some better photos of the truck too, so I may as well share them. |

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
Got the truck registered, and hopefully it will pass inspection after I fix the brakes, and the turn signals. Just started back with college, and I had to be a chemistry major so I am not sure how much free time I will have during the school year, but I do want to work on it at least one night a week. Oh yeah here are the plates I got.

Re: 71 C20 Full Restore
So apparently we are getting this hurricane sandy up here so I went to relocate the truck from under the rotten trees to a safer place about 2 miles down the road. I figured I would drive it because it had rear brakes, and after getting it into the road i went to grab 1st from low because I had to go down a very steep driveway, and i proceeded to hear a gunshot and lose first gear. I started in second after observing no fluids leaking and made it about a quarter mile. I heard the wheels chirp and knew then it had froze in 4 wheel drive, even though it was shifted to 2 wheel in the cab, I stopped to try and release the hubs, and about 8qts of oil dumped on the road and the engine started smoking really bad, I shut her down and towed it. I am not mad at all because I knew this stuff was old and needed a rebuild it was just inconvenient, and sketchy towing it with a tow strap for a few miles up hill haha. Anyway are there still parts available for the np205 it has? Ill be needing to get it rebuilt haha.
