Alternator hot

I found out this new problem in my '82 shortbed stepside after starting the engine the alternator gets really hot that cant be touched I toke off the positive terminal in the back of the alt. and it runs much hotter I cant remember if I had this problem before I put electric fans and MSD full ignition the car runs perfect the engine cranks easily I just put new battery the voltmeter runs above 13 and drops to lets say 12s when I turn on the lights

Sounds like with all the new additions maybe it doesn't have a high enough amperage output.... maybe...

I will take the alt to electric shop to get it inspected,how many amp the factory alt and which amp can I put and be safe 100 or 140?

Are you saying that you took the bat+ wire off the back and then it got hot? If so that is what should happen, it has nothing to reference and will go to maximum output and cook itself.

They can come in 55A and on up. The harder the amp load the tighter the magnetic field ( which generates heat ). I'd run at least 80A min with cooling fans, plus goodies. If you got a thumpty Bumpty stereo, 100A may be for you.

No I dont have stereo or amps just a headunit on factory speakers that I dont play that much I think I will make an order for 100A amp

You can get a Autozone /O'rielly/ any parts house lifetime warranty 94 amp alternator, just ask for a 84 camaro with a 305 and air conditioning.

100, or the 94 ought to be fine. Police package caprice used to run 110 - 120A for all their electronics.

I dont have too much electronics in the car just two electric fans and the MSD

I wish we have these kind of autoparts here but its really hard to find good old parts

I made few test's today I toke the negative wire off for the fans started the car the alternator didnt get warm put the negative wire back and it gets warm I let the car on for few minutes turned it off the alternator is very hot after that it stayed hot when I changed the jets for the carb it didnt get colder or anything I think the fans drain alot of amps that the alt cant handle it

How do you have your fans wired in? Are they on with the ignition? Or do you have a relay to turn them on? Do you have a thermostat controlled fan?
Also, no matter how your fans are, it does sound like you need a larger capacity alternator.
I see that you are in Bahrain, maybe you can find some old Halliburton trucks or other contractor vehicles with alternators that might work.

The fans are wired with relays and on with ignition and no thermostat because the thermostat seat on the intake is worn I will change the intake along with heads soon then I will put 160 degree thermo and will put a fan switch that turn on at 176 and about the alternator I already made an order for Powermaster 100amp alternator

Today I got my powermaster alt installed it and still get hot !!! I think there is something wrong with the fans or something
