Horn Button Rubber Too Tight - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Are there different sizes of these rubber pieces? I bought a 67-68 version online from classic parts but it is so tight I can't get the horncap on the wheel.

I thought my old one had just shriveled up but the one they sent is the same size as my old one.

Maybe if you just got it wet enough to get it up on the cap, then the water would evaporate? What if you let it sit in the sun for a few min and get really warm?

I think that softening it in some hot water is a good idea, too. It seems tight because it is tight. You don't want your horn button falling off during a sharp corner, do you?

I think that even some used ones are tight. I remember the one on my '65 being tight, too.

Put some spray silicone on the rubber & set it in position & give it a quick rap with the side of your fist.

By tight I mean too short against the steering wheel. The old rubber fits in the contact cup okay but with no travel when the horn button is added to the mix.

I've got it to go on but there is no room left to actually depress the contact to make the horn work. In fact, I had the old one held in place with Black RTV so it would stay in place but it made my horn inop.

Okay guys-- I lubed it up with silicone spray and popped it on but it just latches down on the wheel. There isn't any room for the horn to travel once it is in the contact cup like in these pics show:

The old pieces pictured below kinda shows what should happen when they are connected completely:

Anyone ever have this situation?

What about the spring? I'm thinking that it is the job of a spring to return the button to some distance from the wheel. But, as long as the horn doesn't continually honk....you should be good to go.

I didn't think a spring was used in the 67-68?

I thought the spring steel in the contact at the base of the wheel provided the only pushback for the button?

Thats what I am talking about. It seems that it might get a little weak over time. Maybe a new one is what you need.

There is a flat diaphram spring & insulator ring that goes under the cup. There are some viariations in the depth of the cups. You may have the wrong one.
