fuel issue

Hey all.

My truck has been running great, but recently it has been saking bad and shuttering in driving range-25-60 mph.

I replaced the fuel filter and it fixed the prob for 4 days. this started about 2 months ago. I have now gone through about 20 fuel filters. I just put an inline fuel filter and took the carb filter out. worked for a day then the truck starts shaking again.

Huge misfires and acts like it is starving for fuel.

My tank is 20 gallons. But I can only use 14-15 gallons of it. when it gets to the last 5 it acts like it is out.
When I bought it in sept of 2011, I could run the full 20 gallons, and I didn't have to change the fuel filters. when I was fiddling with it yesterday, I put some of the fuel in a mason jar and it was clear, but bright orange. like orange soda?

the fuel is a day old.

No matter what filter I run now, it shakes and shimmies like crazy.

The carb is a new 4bbl q-jet, and properly tuned, as is the timing.
It is a 305 with 135K
all of the vacuum lines are fine.

Thinking the tank is contaminating the gas?
Really need help before i take it to the shop.
I will have to be using someone elses car for now until it's fixed

I've never seen orange fuel before, sounds like there is some rust in your tank and its mixing with the gas. It also sounds like a fuel pump that is on its way out. What is the pressure? Pumps for these engines are pretty cheap. Could you post a picture of this orange fuel so we could see just how orange it is?

fuel pressure seems consistant.

when I bought the truck it sat since about 1999; the gas tank straps were gone. I have some fabbed up ones holding it up.

I cleaned the bottles the fuel is in.
no sugar or whatever else that may cause it to change color

id take the tank out and send it to a radiator shop to have it boiled out and checked. Id also inspect the fuel lines for leakage sounds like there is some kind of junk in there and either its rusting or leaking into your tank

Yeah, looks like old fuel. Does it smell kinda like varnish?

Also, where are you getting your gas from? Same gas station? Different stations?

I've had old gas before, and it just won't fire off right.

If you clean the tank make sure you seal it.

hey all.

I popped the filler neck off the tank and took out 3 gallons, clear as a bell, I ran the truck for 30 minutes before taking the gas out.

It's like it changes to clear when it's warm, when the truck sits, the fuel in the filter is orange until warm.

:P

Family is wanting me to get rid of it. But I am getting about 15mpg with it.

I am going to empty the tank, fill it with some fresh gas from my local station I have used for the last year. I will post what happens

is it a three line fuel pump?
could the return be suckin dirt from somewhere?
I wouldn't just drain the tank,i'd remove and clean/check it

somebody poured old gas into my gen,had to drain it,but it all looked like that
