Tailgate pivot bolt removal

I've been searching around the forum and found a lot of threads about putting hidden latches on the tailgates. Nothing specific to what I'm need to do.

I want to remove the pivot bolt, chains and latch to either get the chrome plated or powder coated. I know the pivot bolt has a nut on the other side but there's no hole on the inside to remove it. everything seems welded up on the inside.

Any idea on the best way to remove the pivot bolt to get the hardware off?

Thanks,

Scott

Re: Tailgate pivot bolt removal

The pivot bolt simply threads right into a nut that's welded on the inside. There's no need to access it from the back.

My pivot bolt was actually flattened, ever so slightly, on each side and I just put the appropriate size wrench on it and twisted it right off.

MisterC nailed it, it screws into a nut welded to that panel. I like using a big honkin' crescent wrench just for the leverage. They usually come out pretty easy though.

Excellent! You know I was hoping that was the case. The flat edges are not that apparent at first glance.

Thanks for the info!

Re: Tailgate pivot bolt removal

I realize now that initial question was pretty dumb. I wasn't sure if the nut on the inside was welded. My luck I'd have backed the pivot bolt out only to hear a thud on the inside.

So, now I'm looking for chrome chains, latch and pivot bolt. Anyone know of a source? I've looked around and find zinc and stainless. I'm pretty sure I saw chrome somewhere.

Thanks,

Scott
