Manual or Power rack?
I am going to be putting a Heidts front end on my 55 1/2 ton.
It really does not steer too hard with the stock manual steering. Any thoughts on weather to go manual or Power rack? Ed |

We'll need to know your age, weight and the size of your biceps before we can answer that question.

Re: Manual or Power rack?
i used a power rack in my 58, partially because i had to put a ps pump in for the hydroboost.
i think i would have been happier with a manual rack, but i would never be without the hydroboost if you do go with a power rack, use a ford ps pump, not a gm pump gm pump has too much pressure and volume.

Re: Manual or Power rack?
Flaminriver has a pressure adapter that goes in GM pump for power racks

Re: Manual or Power rack?
I have had a power and a manual rack in the same vehicle (51 AD). If you aren't parallel parking it on a regular basis---I would do the manual. A manual is in mine now and the power one is under the work bench.

Re: Manual or Power rack?
The thread is a few months old but I think Ogre pretty will hit it right on the spot. What works great for one guy might steer hard as all get out for another guy who gets in the same truck an power steering that is too light for one guy to have a good feel of the road is perfect for the next.
And no joke, your age, how you intend to drive the truck and how far you plan on driving it all contribute to the decision. That said, I'm going with a power rack on mine because at 66 years old my aches and pains don't feel like trying to handle manual steering on the truck on the 2000+ mile road trips I have planned. Also I plan to run a Hydrovac booster and will need the pump on the truck to run that.

Re: Manual or Power rack?
Speedway says if you use the T-Bird rack and pinion you can use the GM Saginaw pump with no modifications. True?

Re: Manual or Power rack?
I'm thinking you are correct Zimspad but I'm not positive on the added steps on installing a T bird rack or exactly what years work.

Re: Manual or Power rack?
For information, if you use a 82-88 T-Bird rack and pinion you can use a GM Saginaw pump with no modifications according to Speedway. You will need to use offset bushings as these racks are 15 1/2" which are available from Speedway or Unisteer. Much easier to mount to your SBC than finding brackets for a Ford pump.

Re: Manual or Power rack?
03 mustang mc and hydrobost. frame mounted. with remote fill reservoir. works great.
look in my build for lots of pics. i ran it with the gm pump for 2 years. added the flow reducer to the gm ps pump last fall, it makes a world of difference in the steering.
