IPOD only radio?

I was talking to a friend of mine and he suggested that instead if running a head unit with an Ipod adapter, that I should leave the stock head unit in place and then run an IPOD w AM/FM into an amp, and then into the 4x10 in the front and the 5.5s in the kick panels. It sounded like a great idea but for the life of me I can't find the ppieces he's talking about. I think it would be cool to just disconnect your Ipod and take it with you. Anyone seen such an animal?
Thanks.

Re: IPOD only radio?

wouldn't actually be too complicated. get a y cable that goes from aux on one side(into your ipod) into two RCA's (red and white into the amp) on the other. Connect that into the input of your amp, and the speakers into the normal spots on the amp. You would also need to connect the ignition wire from the amp up to the truck like if you were using the amp normally otherwise it won't power up. Can't say I've done it before, but it shouldn't be terrible to accomplish.

Re: IPOD only radio?

I was able to find a cable on Amazon thad did just this. It is Ipod to RCA, and has a remote turn on and ground also. I ran a line level to the amp to control the volume. It works pretty slick.

Re: IPOD only radio?

I haven't researched all the factors with amps, but my background is Electrical Engineering so I know the basics.

Most amps have two different types of inputs, a line-level input that you would connect your regular speaker outputs to, and a low-level RCA input that is meant as a dedicated connection from your head unit to your amp.

I don't know if your IPOD headphone output is going to match exactly to with what the amp is expecting on the RCA inputs. It might be close, it's not like your IPOD is pushing 50W of power, but I know that I wouldn't do this with my own equipment without first researching the issue, or going the safe route and using a low-level converter between the IPOD and amp.

Re: IPOD only radio?

I'm sure the Kicker setup is similar, but the Ipod cable I bought plugs into the main port, and has RCA outs to go into the low level input. I liked that option, and it was only $15.

Re: IPOD only radio?

I have the same kinda cable jacking me into my system, Jon. How do you control volume? Mine locks that out, and I volume control through the preamp. It'd be cool if it worked that way.

Re: IPOD only radio?

I'm actually using a gain control like would be used for a sub. RCA in and out. I mounted it in the ashtray door.

Re: IPOD only radio?

I have an adapter that will plug into an amp and then into your ipod. It also charges the I-Pod and has a smaller jack that can be plugged into any MP3 player. I got this for mine but decided to go a different way. This may work for you.Universal iPod/iPhone/MP3

Audio Cable
• Compatible with all iPods (except Shuffle)
• Converts iPod or 3.5mm to RCA Audio Output
• Charges iPod/iPhone including 5V

Re: IPOD only radio?

I used to have one of those for my s10, but I hated how poorly it worked. May have just been a bad brand (Belkin), but it was around $70 so I would have thought it would work better... The idea behind them is fantastic so if you have a working one then more power to you!

Re: IPOD only radio?

Here is a link to the ipod cable I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Metra-AIP-RCA-...d+to+rca+cable . I ran the RCA cables to a mgain control knob (like you would use to control sub input- RCA in and out), then ran that back the amp (with splitters- it's a 4 channel amp). I am sure the sonic quality can be outdone, but the price was right. The rest of my system is 6 1/2 Pioneer seperates in the doors (tweeters in the a-pillars), and Pioneer 6x9's in Jeff's (bigblock73) 6x9 brackets. Everything except the brackets and ipod cable were leftovers from a buddy and it gets the job done. The best part is that it is mostly hidden, and I can put an 8 track player back in the dash. That was really my whole goal all along.
