Power Steering Conversion Kit Installation

Hey guys,

My truck project is ready for the next step. I want to add power steering, but I am discouraged about the labor estimates I am getting to install it. Two shops quoted me about 8-10 hours.

My question is: Can I do this myself? I have pretty basic mechanical knowledge and plenty of tools etc....but don't want to get over my head.

I also want to replace all the rubber bushings in the front end while I do the exchange.

Anyone that has installed these kits, please let me know what I am up against

You can buy the brackets w/ the bolts and assemble the parts yourself or buy the whole kit and be done with it.

I used captain fabs kit with the rag joint that slips over the shortened steering shaft. All you really need is a drill and some wrenches and a cut off wheel. It worked great.

wow, 8-10 hrs-sounds like they don't want the job, IMO.

I used Captainfabs kit and a new steering box and pitman arm. Piece of cake and I usually screw stuff up the first time.....I wouldnt pay anyone 8-10 hours labor to do it. Sounds like they just don't want to do it.

Does the Captain Fabs Kit need any welding done on the shortened shaft? The Rez kit does need a small weld which I don't do, but not a big deal really...just a drive to a welder and the shaft seems to come out pretty easily.

Thanks guys, I think I can handle this. Replacing all the rubber bushings in the front end might be a bit more challenging, but I plan on doing that too and then bringing the truck for alignment after that to the pros.

You can drill and cross bolt it. Welding would be preferred. (I havent got around to it yet)

I would really like to hear all of you guys true est to do the job. and do it so that your work is all proper and guaranteed. remember that their time starts when they drive it into the shop and ends when it is working and going out of the shop. it is not just putting on a steering box, but pump, pulley, lines and str column. odds are they may have to weld up a crack or 2 or new ends on the d/link. they hopefully are not going to do a 1/2 ass job, it is more than a 2 hr job

I agree with you Ron....this isn't going to be a slam dunk.....but luckily the guy from Rez was really helpful and I feel confident I can handle this with some welding help from a friend. Looking forward to the project.

I dont have a welder so mine is drilled and bolted.

Just to add to Woog's list, here is my saga. Been running now for a couple of years without trouble, definitely worth the effort.

There is a long argument about the pros and cons of welding on the steering system in my thread.
