Picked up this 66 LWB 283, nice work truck
Hi Folks,
I'm pretty thrilled to have just purchased a 66 lwb fleet from the second owner who used it as a handyman truck. I was looking for a work truck, ideally with some character and found this around the corner, 5 miles from where I live. I've been looking for a while not sure really what i wanted until i saw this. I saw it on Craigslist Saturday morning and owned it 3 hours later. Nice shape for a work truck, it has tan (fawn?) interior which looks all very original and in really good shape, very little rust. I'm not sure if the exterior paint is original color, because its different than the interior. All manual of course, 3 spd with overdrive... no power windows...though bonus an 8 track tape... I don't think this truck has been much further 50 miles from the Fremont,CA plant it where it appears it was originally built. Anyway it will be a fun project and useful for me on our small piece of land. I definitely plan on enjoying this new old truck. Nice to make all your acquaintance, i'm sure i'll be back looking for some of the great info that's posted here. Cheers, Jase Thomasser Santa Cruz Last edited by jthomasser; 06-27-2012 at 11:41 AM. Beautiful truck. Welcome to the forum!
I sure do miss Santa Cruz. I worked on Delaware Street 3-4 blocks from the coast for 8 years. Use to cruise West Cliff Drive down to the boardwalk almost every day at lunch. Never a shortage of eye candy.

More pics!
They all came with that fawn/gold color interior paint, and that does appear to be a correct color or at least close to it. Truck looks good from here! |

Nice truck!
Did the ad make mention of the 8 track tape? Just thinking I may have seen the ad myself when I was searching last week. I bought a 66 on Saturday also. |

Nice Truck. I remember driving down to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk in the 70's I can't remember if it was Tuesdays or Thursdays they had 1924 Nites after 5PM. All rides were 25 cents. I spent a lot of time riding the Big Dipper. The good old days.

Nice find Jase! I would be interested in knowing what size tires you have on it. I am about to purchase new ones and trying to figure out what I want. Those seem to fill the wheel wells nicely for my taste.

Re: Picked up this 66 LWB 283, nice work truck
It's real hard not to be jealous, when you live in the northeast.....anything that's been around here is generally a rust bucket!
I'd say the real bonus on that one is the overdrive......lots of guys are trying to upgrade to SOME kind of OD these days. I don't know what percentage of these trucks had that OD, but you rarely see them today! BTW, I too have fond memories of Santa Cruz.....I lived in S.J. in the late 60's and went there often! (Though I can imagine, like everywhere, it's a lot different now, 40+ years later...........) I remember cruising over the Pacheco (sp?) Pass, in my 56 210 Delray, they had a plywood cutout of a black & white, tucked in a side cutoff....you had to get right up on it before you realized it was 2 dimensional! sure slowed the traffic! |

I agree great score cool bumper, 283 and overdrive bonus, perfect color combo. Ladder racks tore up the stack pockets of my 66 step side years ago. looks like yours is a better design got 40 more years on it than what I had. Enjoy.

Nice find...great looking truck. Nice to have the overdrive too. Looks ready to use as is. The tow and go bumper will be nice for towing. How about some engine/interior pics?

After some checking around i guess i'm fortunate to have the OD, i'll be looking at getting that sorted out in the next month amongst other things when i can find some time. For now i'm going to use as a small farm truck, i like cars so i'm mindful i'd like to restore close to stock some time or another, i've had muscle, sports cars in the past, tired of all the seriousness around that scene. I'm really looking forward to having some genuine fun and usefulness with the truck. thanks all for the nice welcome. |

Very nice...clean interior. I think you did good on this find. Mine is also a daily driver and a restoration at the same time. Glad to see its going to be on the road and used.
