Factory A/C??

Hi everyone. I recently bought a 1968 Chevy C-10 V6 with factory A/C that I am converting to a daily driver. All the A/C parts are gone including compressor, drier, and hoses. Looking around at different parts options and there seem to be many. Some outfits sell them as a package. Regarding performance, which is the best set up for blowing cold air that any of you have experienced? Thanks!

Re: Factory A/C??

The best setup I've experienced is a rebuilt stock setup, with R12 Freon. I rebuilt a friends 70 Blazer a/c system... rebuilt compressor with new seals, and had the hoses redone and then charged it up with R12. Worked great.

Some of the new R134 a systems don't work well in an old system because an R12 condenser is what they call a tube and fin style. An R134a style condenser is a parallel flow design. The way the refrigerant flows through the condensers is much different. R134a molecules are about 1/3rd the size of R12. Without the correct style of condenser they just do not work properly.

Some aftermarket systems, like Vintage air work good, because they use the correct type of condenser. I've seen the cheaper universal a/c kits that have the wrong parts, and they don't work well at all.

V-6 parts are tough to find. The proper brackets may even be harder..
