repainting a dash pad

hey all i got a dash pad from a friend awhile back and its gark grey and looks to be light grey under that but there both the wrong color and was wondering what would be the best way to prep it so i can paint it to mach my interior.

but heres another issue someone had a carpet cover on it and its got double sided tape on it it places. what would be the best way to remove them without hurting the dash and still removing all the residue from the glue?

and im sure you would recomend sem coat to paint it with but im not sure what it had been painted/ dyed with to make it dark grey so im kinda worried how it might react to the sem coat paint/ dye

thanks , bill

Re: repainting a dash pad

You could probably talk to someone at a automotive paint store about the paint issues. Might also check over on autobodystore.com to see if you could find an answer.

As for the double sided tape, scrape/roll as much as you can off with your finger. Whatever residue is left you can get off with goo-gone or rubbing alcohol. If you use the goo-gone be sure to clean the greasy residue off with rubbing alcohol prior to painting.

Re: repainting a dash pad

After you perform what was mentioned above, get some SEM vinyl paint prep and adhesion promoter. Scrub the whole dash down with detergent (dish soap) and a green pad and then use the prep/promoter in order and exactly as recommended and then use your SEM vinyl paint. Here is a pic of my dash after I did the exact same thing. There was also a dark brown coat of paint that some one else had done and I didn't have any issues:

Re: repainting a dash pad

Ya I mine had some really bad high gloss black on it. So I took some high grit sand paper to it lightly, wiped it down with paint prep, primed it, and shot it with Dupli-Color Vinyl and cloth paint and it turned out looking like it was factory. Was very happy with the end results. A low gloss clear on top might not be a bad idea also to help protect from any scratching.
