Question Trouble with VIN decoding. PLEASE HELP.

I have had COUNTLESS 73-87 Chevy trucks and I just bought another today. 1980 3/4 ton 4x4. I am having trouble with the third digit in the VIN. The first two are CK and the next is an X. X doesn't seem to be in the books or on-line to decode what engine. The rest of VIN is correct except the X. What gives?? Anybody have an answer to this riddle??

Thanks guys in advance.

Patriot.

Re: Trouble with VIN decoding. PLEASE HELP.

I did end up finding that X was used in the 73-75 trucks to denote a 307, but thats all that I have found.

No info Russ. Build sticker is gone. It has a GM crate motor that says 350. The air cleaner says 6.6 Liter. All the trucks I have had that have a 400 Smallblock were the "R" code. Still stumped.

It is possible that it is a typo on the VIN plate, I have seen it (actually heard from reliable sources) before. Does the title and registration have an X in it as well?

Not a typo. I thought this as well so I went outside to look at the truck. The truck has the "X" in the VIN. Both title and VIN have the "X". The truck is from Casper Wy. Titled in Wy. The reason I wanted it was for the 400 Turbo/205 combo. Trying to build a good pull truck. The truck even has a Dana 44 front not the Corp 10 bolt. 79 and up used the Corp 10 bolt and this an 80. The truck is all original except the crate engine. This sure is one strange truck.

If I can remember how I will post pictures of title and VIN.

Look at the door jamb sticker as well if it has one.

Re: Trouble with VIN decoding. PLEASE HELP.

Some 80' model trucks still had the 44. I parted my grandpa's 80 K20 and it had a dana 44 as well.

Re: Trouble with VIN decoding. PLEASE HELP.

If it's the original 400... the engine ID pad should have digits 1, 6, 7, 8-13 from the VIN.
The block casting number behind the driver side head on the block will give you another ID.

GM used both Dana and GM Corporate 10bolt axles between 1977 & 1980.
