Having some speedometer issues

ok guys on my 78 the PO took out the speedo cables and filled up the hole on the trans with silicon, i finally got all of it out and now i cant figure out how to connect the lower speedo cord does is just screw into the trans or is there something missing? all there is on the trans is threads. does something else hook up to that? or just the lower cable? if yal could put up a picture example it would really help out. also its a 350 turbo trans if that helps and if anyone has a working speedometer for the 78 please pm me!

Its a 2wd truck right? What does the hole look like, can you see into the trans or is there a spot fro the cable to go into?

i finally pulled all of the silicon out of the hole, and tranny fluid started pouring out, im assuming that theres supposed to be a gear drive where the silicon was? what would be my best bet on fixing this?

edit: yes it is a 2wd

If its just an open hole I would go to the junk yard and get the part that threads into the trans and that the cable threads onto. You will need to look inside and see what Colorado driven gear is on the trans and that will help you decide what drive gear you will need to buy that will fit in the insert your getting at the junk yard. You will see when you take the part off the donor truck how it fits in.

thanks man, im thinking about getting both new gears? i mean there had to be a reason he took the gear drive out! do i just need to buy the right tooth count? also my trannsmission isnt stock apparently its from a "camaro" thats what the po told me so could you help me in finding the vin numbers?

Look Athens the driven gear and if its in good shape run it or you can change both if u want. The vin numbers on the truck or numbers in your tranny? If the po had problems like I do with the speedo on mine I can see why he plugged the hole haha.

Also I was originally set up for cruise control, but I'm not going to hook it up, could I run a speedo cable from the trans strait to the speedometer?

You shoukd be able to if you get the longer cable just go from the speedo to the trans, I don't see why you couldn't?

They sell tha cable that goes from speedo to trans..for non cruise ope'd model...i'm seen them in LMC...I'm sure you can get one fron a parts house.

heres another question, i found a nice speedo in good shape but its from an 85, would it still work on my 78?

Yes the 85 speedo is a direct bolt in but it has a little diffrent face and only goes to 85 also that is a truck trans camaro only came with a short tail shaft 350
