Re: Trans dipstick ?

maybe that's whats wrong with mine...didn't seem to line up. Figured I'd just need to do some bending... or something creative.

Re: Trans dipstick ?

I was able to bend the tab so that it would bolt onto the back of the head.

You need a LS style 4L80E dipstick tube, & you need the factory style "double studded" bellhousing bolt & the 8x1.25mm nut.

Re: Trans dipstick ?

Thanks clinebarger...this one's a Hughes steel tube dipstick. Definition shows - "Transmission Dipstick, Locking, Bellhousing Mount, Chevy, 4L80E"

Now that I know where it probably "should mount"...maybe I can inflict a bend or two in just the right spot to line up its single mount point. I'll need that stud and nut for it tho.

But it's not for a LS. GM is the only vendor that I know of with the correct stick & tube. 04 2500HD 6.0L would be the application.

Bending the Hughes mount again wont help...It's made to bolt to the missing bellhousing bolt.

Re: Trans dipstick ?

Cline is right...GM is the only one who does this right for the 4l80e. Most places will try to sell you the 4l60e stick, or a universal one. Almost no universal will work because 98% if them do not have the locking top, with exeptions like the REALLY expensive stainless ones from Lokar.

I ended up getting the dipstick tube from my gm dealer, although at the time he couldnt' find a dipstick in stock. I ended up modifying one from a 4l60, cut and welded to the right level. I will replace it this summer though, its a little ghetto. My dealer doesn't stock much, but he will usually give out the part #'s (he doesn't care much about customer retention lol) and I'll buy the stuff from gmpartsdirect or similar.

$31.28 15183801 Indicator - dip stick : New PN 15791230
$1.98 1259475 - Dipstick tube seal 4L80e
$2.63 15724226 - Stud

prices are from www.gmpartsdirect.com
