How to fix the spring in the column for the gear lever

Hi;

I've been searching without luck to find a thread on how to fix the spring in the column that holds the gear selector lever taught.

I can see that my spring is broken, but I am unsure how I would go about replacing it....would I have to take the entire column apart to access it?

Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Re: How to fix the spring in the column for the gear lever

I did it not too long ago, IIRC I just picked it out with a pair of needle nose. It came out in two pieces. I picked the longer of the two, streched it as far as I could and squeezed it back in.

It isn't great but it's not nearly as floppy.

I found a source that actually sells just that little spring - let me look around.

Found it (well one place anyway) - 18 bucks, that's probably why mine is still loose.

Just the spring:

and every other column part you could imagine:

Oh yeah, as a bonus - if you buy a part you also get free access to their repair tutorials.

The bone yard is full of them. A column ins't that complicated. A few special tools needed for a tilt but they are available fairly cheap at most parts houses or Harbour Freight. The other option is to get a complete column out of the bone yard and install it instead.

My column is alreay painted, that's why I'd prefer to fix it.

So, is there a better way to get the spring out than stretching it?

I have most of the tools for steering wheels / columns.

Thanks!
