cam install

If I pulled out my cam only to put it back in (long story) do I have to use cam lube again? also on a 350 74/85 engine is there a cam retainer plate that goes infront of the cam to hold it or does the gear hold it in place?

Re: cam install

yes on cam lube and make sure the lifters go back in the same bore they came from, you can use a piece of 2x4 and a butterfly bit for the lifters to sit in and mark the front and rear so you know the proper location, and no retainer is used on the v8 just the thrust surface on the cam gear

Red face Re: cam install

What do you mean by a cam retainer plate? Are you talking about the plate that locks the cam bolts? I've always used a cam button on the front of my smallblocks and that was held in by that bolt locking plate. I was told that it helped keep the cam from walking. As far as the cam lube, any time that I have pulled a cam to replace it with another cam I have not put the lifters in any kind of order because I was replacing them with new ones. I have had to reuse 2 cams that I had pulled also. Both times I had to get new lifters. If you have kept them in order and are sure they are going back into their original bores, no need for lube as they already have their wear pattern established. It won't hurt but is not necessary.
