turbo 350 swap
Alright well after messing around with the standard saginaw i finally gave up on it, its just to much of a hassle, i went out and got a turbo 350 all i need is the stall and a couple other things .... but ive got a couple questions
1) would it bolt up to the L6 230 ? 2) would i need to shorten the drive shaft and will it fit right 3) do i necessarily have to cut out the original crossbeam to fit the new transmission in place and also what other modifications would i need to support the transmission 4)as for cooling the auto trans is it better to go with the trans cooling system or go with one that is integrated in to the radiator? 5) (just curious) what causes an engine to turn off when the standard transmission is not in the proper gear? and why does it not happen with automatics?

Re: turbo 350 swap
I have a TH350 connected to my L6 230 (fitted by the previous owner) so I might be able to answer a few question. Yes it will bolt up, my driveshaft appears to be stock but it was an automatic before the swap, if you're going from manual to auto you may need to modify it because I think the manual is shorter. Whoever installed my transmission put the original crossmember at an angle, using only 2/4 of the original holes, may not be the best way of doing it but its held up for years. Also, you will likely have a hard time getting the kickdown to hook up to the carb, the one I'm using is pretty short and looks like a much different style than what was originally on there. Speedometer cable may be an issue too, I'm still tinkering with mine trying to get it to work. With stock 3.73 gears and 32 inch tires I'm doing about 2700 RPM at 60 mph.
EDIT: Also I'm using an integrated trans cooler, bent the lines myself and it does a good job of keeping it cool, I'm using a champion 2 row radiator. |

Re: turbo 350 swap
Thanks for the reply, and yea i might be getting a new drive shaft hopefully go with a one piece, im thinking about just cutting the rivets off and maybe see if it could work in a different location... im not to sure how the kickdown works but hopefully ill get some help on that from an old hot rodder friend i met.... does the speedometer cable that goes on the standard not go on the t350?
ill probably get a radiator from a friend he sais it went to a nova and it has the integrated cooler on there, i tried hooking up an electrical fan to my radiator today but found out that the space between the engine and the radiator is to small, any one came across this problem? also question about starter...... i remember bolting the starter to the bell housing and was later told that it wouldn't work on the t350, so my question is where would the starter bolt on if it doesn't bolt to the bell housing any more?

Re: turbo 350 swap
starter bolts to the block. diagonal bolt pattern= 168 tooth flexplate, straight across bolt pattern = 153 tooth flexplate
