Starter will not disengage!

Trying to get a parts truck to run that I just got in. When I turn the key to "start", the starter engages but will not stop, even with the key turned off. I have to run up and yank the negative battery cable off to get it stop. Is the problem in the switch or in the starter? Thanks for any help.

Re: Starter will not disengage!

I had the same problem, in my case it was the starter.

I think the first easy step is take it to your local parts store they should be able to check it for free, then work from there.

Re: Starter will not disengage!

I ended up buying a new starter. I was told that something internally was burned out. I tried a new solenoid before the starter but same issue.

Re: Starter will not disengage!

I had the same exact problem several years back with a new rebuilt starter. I took it back and got another and it was fine.

Re: Starter will not disengage!

Thanks for the input guys. I was hoping is was just the solenoid, but I may replace the starter. I don't like laying on my back in 97 degree weather!

Re: Starter will not disengage!

I had a 67 that did the same thing, turns out that the pinion stop was missing.
