Rear end slop

Maybe I just used bad search terms but I couldn't find good info on how much slack should be in my 12 bolt 4.10 rearend. When we reinstalled my axles after the brake upgrade I was messing around and the yoke will spin I would guess ~3/4" before the wheels actually engage. What type of tolerances are normal here, and is there other problem areas if tho is out of tolerance besides a rebuild/resetting of gear lash?

Re: Rear end slop

I have not actually measured the rotation as you did but it seems to be close to normal when you consider that the spider gears , axles, and ring/pinion gears are part of the looseness. If no one comes up with more information I will get a measurement like yours off of a 12 bolt.

No posi... For now. My hope is to run the axles as is for now and once the truck is finished and cash flow has recovered, drop it off and have a posi and all new pumpkin guts installed down the road.

Re: Rear end slop

More than likely the spiders are excessively worn. You can purchase a spider gear kit to replace them which should tighten things up assuming ring and pinion are in good shape.
