Thumbs down I gave up

Cleaning out the garage and calling the junk man to haul it away. Found a rust hole on the frame and lost interest in it.

Don't know if I'll pull the trigger on another one or not. Probably not. Not crazy about working in the heat which is here nine months out of the year.

Wink Re: I gave up

Presently on the fence. Looked at it again today and the rust hole is near where a c-notch plate might cover it, as I had been mulling over doing a 4/6 drop. I didn't notice it until after I removed the bed. Previous owner apparently used it for his fishin' vehicle and didn't worry about washing it after spending the day at the beach, and the rotten wood bed floor didn't help either...

I used to have the attitude that nothing is too far gone to fix up unless you can't bolt a license plate to it.

Nevertheless I'll need a welder even though the plates mount with grade 8 hardware. I'll be visiting some shops in the area for advice.

Summit has the McGaughey's kit complete for about $500, might be worth it?

If I have time during the week I'll take a picture of the hole.

Re: I gave up

Don't quit yet,
I found rust on my frame, and I was able to fix it.
Anything can be fixed, it's never to late.
Now go out to your truck and turn it into what you want.

Re: I gave up

Throwing your truck in the garbage because you found a rust hole in the frame? If that was the case my whole truck would have been in the crusher many years ago! These trucks are ment to be fixed. Get a welder and get to it!

Re: I gave up

Stick with it, Notyo. Every time something goes wrong with my square, I start speed dialing the local scrap yard. Then, I see what needs to be done and do it. I get great satisfaction from doing a needed repair.

Re: I gave up

Not to be contrary, but if you have rust in one spot you likely have it in other spots. I would think in your part of the country rust free squares should be plentiful, so salvaging good parts off your existing truck and transferring them to another rust free truck is what I would do. In AZ rust free squares are $2-$3K (needing work but rust free) and nice and driveable. You will, of course, have to replace all of the wear parts over time, but that is to be expected in a 30 year old truck.

Re: I gave up

If one rust hole is enough to make you want to quit then go ahead and quit and save your money. You will never finish a whole project with that little motivation.

Youll get there. Some of the nicest rods out there took many years to complete. You gotta stop watching overhauling. LOL.

Thanks for all the encouragement fellas. I have a few leads on where I can get some welding done locally. So far I only found one bad rust spot in the frame.
