Frame Dimensions

I have a 69 1/2 ton 4x4, and the frame from the bed back is pretty pitted. It's not rotted all the way through but it can't be very strong. Are the frame rails from a 73-87 frame the same size (height, width) I was thinking I could just cut the pitted sections out and weld in pieces from a doner frame and brace it good. 67-72 4x4 frames are hard to come by in New York that aren't rotten.
Thanks,Marty

No, they are not the same. I am in the process of swapping an 87 suspension into my 69 1/2 ton 4x4. They are taller in places and dont have the same curvature over the wheelwells. I ended up swapping the springs, axles and mounting brackets. Needless to say I got introduced to removing rivots (from both frames) the hard way.

Re: Frame Dimensions

Thanks guys I'll have to keep my eye out for one, I was hopeing for a cheaper easier route, 4x4 frames are hard to come by in the rust belt, we turned them all into plow trucks and destroyed them.

Re: Frame Dimensions

Would a 2wd frame work since he just needs the back half of a frame?

Re: Frame Dimensions

I'm pretty sure the 2wd frames bump out above the rear axle while the 4wd frame stays straight. Not sure though maybe someone can confirm? Thanks for the suggestion though, if they are the same, that saves a lot of looking.

Re: Frame Dimensions

the '72 2wd frame is much different in the rear axle area than the 4x4 frames. i'd assume the '69s are different also. it is difficult to adapt spring hangars to the front end of the rear springs on the 2wd frame because it kicks out at about 5* and up at 24* right where the spring hangars need to mount.
