Bought another one!

Picked up another square to be my work truck while restore my 87'.

It's kind of a weird truck, too, 1984 C10 Silverado, fully loaded, with a straight six. Can't say I've seen too many straight six, fully loaded trucks. It will never be desireable, per se, but it is rare!

Got it for $700, 2 owner (second owner was the original owner's grand daughter) with what I assume to be a cracked head on the 250. It will fire up, but it just POURS coolant out the side of the block. I'd really like to fix the straight six, since I've always loved them. I don't need a hotrod or anything, and this truck is still pretty much all original (except the interior now...which I did).

The paint should shine up pretty nice, and I've already swapped wheels and tires, along with the seat and carpet from my old truck into it to clean up the interior. Also replaced the door bushings with some PEX tubing I had laying around, so they shut a lot nicer now! I do need to replace the wing window on the passenger side, since it's broken. Might just steal it from my 87's doors.

Just unloaded her in this pic:

Interior was fairly rough, but not too bad overall. Probably going to put some LMC panels, these ones are dry and crumbly on the top:

New wheels/tires:

Put the carpet from my 87' R10 into it:

Aaand done!

Here is what the side of the engine block looked like after running for about 5-10 seconds...

Re: Bought another one!

Hmm. Looks like it's got some potential.

Just a couple insignificant observations -

a) Wonder if it's had a windshield replaced, since a Silverado should have the chrome lace in the rubber around the glass

b) Silverado would also have the brushed aluminum applique on the Instrument panel cluster bezel, so either it's had the bezel swapped or the applique came unglued and fell off.

Should be fun -

Yeah, it should definitely clean up nice!

Pretty sure the windshield has been replaced, however, the back glass still has the proper chrome lace in the rubber.

I'll have to take a closer look at the bezel for traces of glue. I do have the Silverado bezel from my 87 that I could put in the make it correct, but then again, I've kind of thrown originality out the window already!

Re: Bought another one!

I guess I don't pay very close attention actually. I was looking through the pictures I took, and it does have the chrome lace. It just doesn't show up in that other picture. You can definitely see it here!

That's the same color combo as mine, except mine didn't have the top painted the cream color. I like it, should make a nice driver.

I am glad to hear that you are looking to keep it with an inline 6 engine. Our trucks are twins (except mine is a C20).

A 6cyl Silverado? Neat! Can we get more shots of the engine, like what does a 6cyl with A/C hanging off it look like!!

Re: Bought another one!

Just a tip if you replace the chrome "lock strip" on the windshield rubber - get the OEM or high quality lock strip. I had a cheap one installed when I got my windshield replaced and it turned brown in 2 months. I think I am just going to remove it completely.

Yeah, I love straight sixes, so smooth running and almost impossible to kill.

Re: Bought another one!

Just curious, what is the word above the Silverado fender name plate? I don't think that I have seen that fender name plate before.

It's a dealer stick-on from the dealer this was originally purchased from. Durant Chevrolet in Granbury, TX.

Someone requested pictures of the AC on the straight six, so here you go! It uses an R4 compressor with a big huge clutch on it.

Just never know what you're going to see around here!

I wonder how many were built like this or if this was an order or what?

When I was at the Chevy dealer, they had ordered a loaded Silverado for a guy, but had forgot to choose what carpet and transfer case. Some how the thing got built with leather everywhere, wood grain accents, premium sound, power everything, and a vinyl floor mat and lever action 4x4 instead of push button.

I used some 1/2" I had laying around, but it didn't quite wrap all the way around, so 3/4" would probably be better. Worked incredibly well!

Re: Bought another one!

She's dead, Jim...

Would definitely require a hone or bore and a rebuilt cylinder head to get this thing back into running condition, along with a new head. Looks like it's time to prep the 305/700R4 to go in...

Wow. That's a real shame! I hope the 305 is just going to be temporary while you're getting the 6 fixed up!

Unfortunately, probably not. Since this is a work truck, I don't want to put too much money into it, so I'll probably run the TBI 305 until it dies.

I'm also converting the truck to fuel injection; I really don't want to pull the TBI stuff off the 305, and I can definitely appreciate the added reliability it brings to the table. I've got the harness pretty much ready to go into the truck, just waiting for a fuse block and some relays I ordered to show up so I can setup the battery constant and switched 12v+ power sources for the ECM.

Re: Bought another one!

At least hold onto the brackets and such for the 250 just in case... Never know when they might be useful to you or someone else!

You'll be quite pleased with TBI I think, fuel economy ain't to great, but it's otherwise a bulletproof system.
