Some help with stroking my 305
Now I know what everyone is thinking, why mess with a 305 and just get a 350 but I like my 305 and it workes for what I use it for(daily driver). Ive heard of people stroking these out to a 335 and getting pretty good power out of them with still keeping the reliability of the 305. I was just curious in if anyone has done it or if anyone knows how I can go about doing this. Ive heard people say that putting a 400 crank with 350 rods is how to but I just want to confirm.

Ok I've done one of these. I didn't think it was worth it ALLENS86, but here you go. Get the stroker crank [400] then get some pistons from SRP because nobody sells them over the counter. You will have to releave the block just like the 383. You will also need the balancer for a 400 crank and the little balance plate that goes between the flex plate and crank. I would not use the 305 heads because they just don't breathe that good. Now you can make them breath if you hog them out. But to be honest with you just build a 383 you will be happier in the long run and it cost about the same. Thats my 2 cents

You'll be happier with a couple hundred spent on a 305 than a couple thousand spent on a 335. |

Thanks kalbert, yea I was thinking it sounded cool and different. I also am trying to keep my motor passing smog, do you think if I do it the way you were talking about it would pass?

Well being in Cali too I feel your pain on the smog stuff, it does limit you. My understanding is, but no first hand experience, is that anything you do to increase the cubic inches won't fail your smog check, it's sorta stealthy that way. To take advantage of the extra cubes you might want to run a different intake and carb between the inspections that breath better.

At the time the pistons were custom ordered from SRP. The wrist pins was moved up. I did this engine about 15 years ago I was screwing around.

72 vette, never had 427s and tripower ended in 69 i think. So yah all custom plus sidepipes haha
Id you want something different why not take a 350 and throw in a bigger crank than the standard 400 crank?

To each his own, but I just dont see it worth the money and time to stroke a 305 when you can easily swap in a 350 or srtoke a 350 to a 383 and STILL pass smog emissions in CA. I had a 305 in my 82 2wd Jimmy. It was gutless.

I asked about the tripower thing because in Cali it would then fail the visual, doesn't matter if it runs cleaner than stock.
But yeh going bigger and looking stock can work if it blows clean. I had a lot of trouble getting my last carb vehicle smogged tho, if it wasn't FI it scared some of the smog guys around here, really weird. Posted via Mobile Device |

Well it passed visual cause the smog gurus couldnt tell a stock from modified v8 haha just a v8 to all them

there are 335 kits available now, crank rods pistons etc, but like it has been said a 350 would be a better way to spend your money, check wrecking yards for a good core, make sure it is a guarantied core, then take it to a machine shop and get it vated, bored and freeze plugged

Ahhh... that's an area I know nothing about. I live in fantasy land where there is none of that smog stuff (yet). To the best of my knowledge, some of the mild speed parts used to come with CARB paperwork, don't know if that's still the case or not. I'd think if you stick to the CARB stuff, and get it tuned and running the best it can, there'd be no reason you wouldn't pass a sniffer. I've heard of guys pass tests for cars 20+ years newer just by having them fine tuned and running like a top. Don't know if it's true, but have heard stories!
