Re: trying to deciede
Get a cam!!! In all seriousness(is that a word?), if you went ahead and installed a cam, then you only have to have it tuned once. LS engines like more cam, too. On the other hand, stock valvesprings don't like to be revved too far past 5200rpm, so new springs are recomended with a bigger cam, and depending on lift, maybe new pushrods. Being on a budget, the cam upgrade can get costly. A good ECM tuner will usually only charge once for an initial tune, then give free upgrades and retunes as you make mods or changes to the engine.

Re: trying to deciede
wait for the cam (and do springs and pushrods at the same time), then get it tuned.
No matter what, it will get re tuned eventually. I'm going to be on my 4th flash, and I haven't even gotten to adding the forced induction stuff yet.

Re: trying to deciede
I used Nelson out of San Antonio and when I changed rear gears, they are sending me another PCM with the changes for shipping only.

Re: trying to deciede
I would cam now if you have the monies... but most cams require springs retainers and locks, sometimes pushrods and lifters depending on the cam you choose. So a $200 cam can cost alot more. I know Howells will reflash if you change tire size rear end ratio for free all you have to pay is shipping. Not sure if they will reflash the rest for free. Its worth calling around to see what companys will do for you.

Re: trying to deciede
if you can't spend the coin for the pushrods/springs/cam support stuff, don't break yourself again on the cam. Buying a small cam that doesn't need a stall or the supporting stuff usually means smaller gains.
If you really want to do one, why not try something like the 'vette cam takeouts, you can get one and springs for a good price used, it will give you some gains, and its driveable on a mostly stock setup. Plus its cheap

Re: trying to deciede
From what I've been reading, the LS6 springs are a good upgrade for stock cams. For anything more than about .550 lift, they're not that great. If you're going to upgrade, go ahead and get some good dual springs.

Re: trying to deciede
no stall cams would be in the less than 218 duration intake side.
I am told a 224 works but I dont think it would drive very well in stop and go. I have a 218 to go in my 6.0 when I find the time.

Re: trying to deciede
I've got that 216/220 low lift cam setting in the garage waiting to go into my 08 silverado. From what I've read it gives gains in hp without killing lowend torque. You can also use the ls6 springs with this cam. The 212/218 is another proven cam. If you don't put a cam in it before you install the motor I'm afraid you will be sorry. A cam really wakes these motors up.
