74 c10 swb- how many rear leafs are there supposed to be?

I looked under the back end and there are only 4? I thought there would be more? How many should there be? I did a search and only found but one article and that person said they had 4, another said 8. Am not sure If i will do a flip or remove some leafs to lower the rear. Anyone?

Most have 4 (3 thin 1 thick overload) but there are some that come with as much as 6 or 8 on 1/2 tons.

you have 8 88jimmy? wow, man mine only has 4 and I thought maybe some were removed by previous owner but even though I have 4, it still has that chevy stink bug look with the front being 2 inches lower that the rear. When there are only 4 guess you cant remove any to lower the rear..

I have a 77 Heavy Half ton and more than 4.
Im sure if you have more, you probably have the Heavy Half option and probably the oversized brakes as well.

The HD spring option has 8. They are longer too. Look at the back of the frame and you will see an extra set of holes where the spring hanger can be moved. If you have 4 then you have just the standard spring package with a smaller payload and towing capacity. 8 leaf is basically a light duty 3/4 ton spring.

Re: 74 c10 swb- how many rear leafs are there supposed to be?

sorry guys I miss counted, I have 7 counting the overload. My truck is just a reg 2wd swb 1500 and sits relatively level, it does have a 2 piece driveshaft which I find odd for a swb so maybe it does have some towing package although it doesnt have a hitch. The leafs look like standard 52" to me and rear hanger buts up to bumper bracket and I see no additional holes forward of the rear hanger.

heres some pics of my 76

You have the longer hd spring package. Not sure why you have 7 instead of 8 tho. Look and you can see where the hanger moves forward for the shorter springs.

I agree with this statement above.
My truck is a light duty C/10.

Here are mine from my 75 :
(Please disregard the damage to the rear of the springs)

Are you CERTAIN you dont have the heavy half package? Check your door and see what your GVWR rating is.

The 5,600 lb. GVWR required all items necessary for the 5,400 lb. rating plus the following minimum additions and/or substitutions:
Option code G50 heavy duty rear springs (2,000 lb. capacity for this application. These springs consisted of 8 leaves, and were 56” long x 2.5X wide).
Front and rear tires with a load capacity of 1,790 lbs.

The 6,000 lb. GVWR required all items necessary for the 5,600 lb. rating plus the following minimum additions and/or substitutions:
Option code F60 heavy duty front springs (1,625 lb. capacity for this application).
Option code J55 heavy duty power brakes (this system replaced the lighter capacity J50 single diaphragm brake booster with a dual diaphragm unit and included larger 11.15x2.75 rear drum brakes for C10 applications).

The 6,050 lb. GVWR package, which represents the lower of two F44 Big 10 capacities, was specifically identical, in terms of chassis and suspension components, to the 6,000 GVWR package which it superseded mid-year. Gross axle weight ratings at this GVWR were 3,100 lbs in front and 3,580 lbs. in the rear, and are the same as those cataloged for the 6,000 lb. model. The 50 lb. increase in GVWR appears to be a result of on paper only engineering. Emission control equipment was the only significant difference between the 1975 6,000 lb. and 6,050 lb. packages.

Mine had 7/1 thats 7 standard and 1 HD that some one heated and bent. I replaced them with another set of 7/1s but I took 2 out and softened the rear end up. My friend has an 86 swb with 3/1 factory. Point is Ive seen 1/1 and it only depends on how soft you want your ride. You can take at least one out Id say if it doesnt make it to bouncy imo. Or use 2" drop shackles.
