Another front end question
I have a 64 Chevy stepside and i wanna update to five lug disc on the front. I have done a lot of research On here and I have a complete front crossmember from a 72 is it easier to replace the complete cross member or just control arms and brake assembly. I've read a lot on here and have seen it done both ways. Thanks in advance.

i was gonna swap it all only because i wanted to rebuild the newer beforehand and then just roll it under while swapping engines.

Swapped out my 65 stepper crossmember to an 85, had to ream out a couple off holes and drill some, 2 for crossmember and one for idler arm... was fairly easy and straightforward, no issues at all...

you dont need to i just swap arm and add drop spindle and brake assy thats all works perfect

My choice - I rebuilt the entire front suspension out of the doner truck so I could take my time collecting & installing the new parts as time and money allowed and I could still drive my truck. It's a good thing too. I plan on keeping my truck until I die, then the grand kids will get it. I bought nothing but the absolute best while rebuilding the front suspension and I have over $1,000 into it by the time I bought springs, drop spindles, poly bushings, new 6 lug rotors, ball joints, rebuilt calipers, new ceramic brake pads, brakes hoses, etc, etc. I bought Raybestos Professional Grade Ball Joints and they might seem kind of high but do you want to trust your life to a $9 ball joint while you're going down the freeway at 80 MPH? I sure didn't.
I built a little stand for my front suspension saddle just high enough to slide my floor jack under it so I can easily jack it into place when the time comes. The little stand also allowed me to install the front springs & lower A arms. I put my new springs in the press at work wrapped a couple of chains around them, compressed them and stuck a bolt through the links to keep the springs compressed for installation. |

If you decide to swap the complete suspension, I would recommend doing so with the engine removed. I have never attempted to do this with the engine in place, but I can just imagine trying to drill 2 new holes and elongate 2 holes with the engine in place. I know others have done it, but I wouldn't.

I would just rebuild the front end you have on there. I put a 77 front end in my 62 in order to get rid of my torsion bars and maybe bag it down the road and that was a pain in the but. I am still not sure if it was worth it.

I decided to just use control arms and brake assembly. Already have the 64 dismantled just waitin on the weekend to get it put back together. Thanks for the input. It was a pretty simple job as far as the tear down goes.
