should I buy this truck?

First of all I hope im not breaking any rules here but I found this 66 GMC on kijiji for $500 and it seems like a really good deal and has many parts that I could use from it like the big back window ect. My only problem is that im 18 and still live at home but I already have 2 trucks and a VW bus. Is it worth it to convince my parents to get it?http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...AdIdZ374382255

Re: should I buy this truck?

To me it looks like a very nice parts truck. If the grille is as nice as it seems, that could be worth several hundred dollars all by itself. And depending on condition, the body and window trim are highly desirable pieces. But to purchase to fix up, I’d say you need to keep looking, especially considering your living arrangements. In addition to the hood there appears to be serious rust along the lower body which is tedious and expensive to repair. If it looks that bad on the outside it’s very likely the floor and cab corners will also need replacement.

Re: should I buy this truck?

It's a parts truck alright. Take an inventory of what you need and what you can sell, scrap it before you bring the parts home.

Re: should I buy this truck?

There's $300 in scrap after you harvest the good parts.
Buy it.

Re: should I buy this truck?

That's a great parts truck.
I see it has the ws washer..probably a 2 speed.
optional back up lights.
rear sport bumper
emblem location and grill letter style says its a '65 and not a '66.
As stated, once you sell the scrap you'll be ahead of the game.

Re: should I buy this truck?

Ask your parents. By now I'm guessing they have sense of just what their son can accomplish when he goes into a project. As a truck that will be stripped of parts and scrapped, there is little doubt that it's worth the asking price, but you need to ask yourself if it is worth the hassle. If this is going to be seen as trouble for mom and dad, it may not be the best move. On the other hand, if you can quickly and efficiently get the truck, strip it, scrap the hulk, and sell parts for a profit, then you might even earn some points with the folks. Good luck!

Re: should I buy this truck?

but at $500.00, you must figure what your return is going to be. your going to have to get it to where ever that you will dismantle it. how much will you get back over your cost and be realistic in the time to take it apart. how fast will you sell and get a return on your investment. plus the aggravation for your parents. it will just be a love of labour, mind you that you will more than likely learn a few things

Re: should I buy this truck?

I say get it, and if you dont fix it, you can always part it out later. Bottom line is they aren't making any more of them.

Re: should I buy this truck?

You better own it. Too many good parts to not buy it. Easily make your money back then some by parting it

Smile Re: should I buy this truck?

It looks like the votes are in Sean....buy it!!
I'd go in with a very respectful offer on that $500.....say $400...again, respectfully!
Then pull all those great parts like the guys said....then tow it to the metal scrap yard and you'll get $150-$200 (or more) for it!!
Definitely take the automatic column & linkage (if still there), trans cross member, complete front grill and bumper, back bumper, big back window and rubber, the side trim, definitely the cab trim and 'custom cab' badges, top clearance lights, All the interior options!!, rear differential.
Does it have power brakes?...take that booster if yes!
If you don't mind being paid for your labour (and nothing is free) then go for it. When the smoke clears you will be ahead financially and you will have a huge bunch of great hard to find parts for your final project or to sell.
Good luck from a fellow Canuck!!

Re: should I buy this truck?

You've got three vehicles at your parents house and want to bring another vehicle home to part out? Do you parents know what you plan to do with your future (college, tech school, McDonald's)? As a parent, my priority is to make sure my son has a plan for life, not use my yard as a hobby shop. I'd say get your own place and do whatever you want. Not trying to be hard, just my .02.
