engine swap 72 custom camper

Hello, I am new to the forum...I have a 72 GMC 3/4 T custom camper. The original 402 ci engine is Kaput, I have a chance to pick up a good running Olds 455 from a 74 delta 88 c/w trans. Also still have the T400 from my truck. Can someone help to say if the 455 will bolt in where the 402 came out? Can the original mounts be used? I know the exhausts wont fit and the accesories will be different and I can deal with that but Im not interested in doing custom frame work Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

Rick

No. The trans will not bolt to the engine. Buick/Olds/Pontiac/Cadillac is a different transmission pattern as a Chevy. Also the motor will not bolt to factory mounts. 455 Olds is definitely worth something, sell it and buy a 454 crate engine. You will be better off.

Re: engine swap 72 custom camper

i am sure it will fit, but you will have to make a lot of mods. on the motor mounts and trans mount. you would have to use the olds. trans. and the drive shaft may need some mods...then exhaust , and no telling what else ....in the late 70 and 80's. this was a common thing on the chevy 5.7 diesel motors...they were an olds motor to start with and i put several olds gas motors in and took the diesel out...it was a easy swap...but yours would not be a simple swap.....but it would be kool to have on in your pickup if you wanted to spend the time....

I guess if you used the whole front crossmember from a '73-87 and used the Diesel mounts it would work. I have a '79 that had a diesel in it and now has a gas Olds 350.

Re: engine swap 72 custom camper

There is an active thread with an Olds powered truck

You can see how it fits, but I still wouldn't do it if not already done. You already have a big block truck with all the correct pulleys and brackets and manifolds. If it were me I would buy a crate 454 and put in there.

Re: engine swap 72 custom camper

It would be a lot cheaper, easyier and retain the value of the truck more more if you rebuilt the 402.
