Cylinder from floor
I have searced for over an hour and cant find what the cylinder on the driver side floor is for? Its on a 71 c10. I just got it and trying to figure out what everything is for. It looks kinda like a fuse and its position on the left side floor of the driver side kinda below the emergency brake?
What is it? what does it do? can it be removed? |

You mean the Headlight Dimmer Switch???
You click it with your foot for high/low beams. Each click changes it from low to high to low to high to low etc...

It works by stepping on it, waiting for it to click, then releasing. If you have ever owned a lamp with a floor switch.. Its the same thing. Its for you high beams

Yer a young whipper snapper ain't ya? All dimmers used to be mounted there.They are simple and easiy replaced when need be.

Wanna hear something stupid? The driving position in my 65 mustang is dang near perfect for me. My wrist reaches the steering wheel just right and I can very comfortably reach the brake/gas pedals, but for some dang reason I CAN NOT reach the dimmer switch. I have to actually scoot down in the seat and stretch my foot out, so I just drive around with the High beams on
They're not bright at all, at least until I do the headlight upgrade to it, and I'm not too short, 5'8".Funny story. My wife had no idea what a dimmer switch was. I told her to "watch this" and I smacked my dash and the headlights magically switched from low to high. I smacked it again and they switched back. I told her to give it a try and they switched again. Kinda freaked her out. I said it was a wiring bug. What she didn't know was I was hitting the dimmer switch with my foot. I had fun with that for a few weeks...

Some older cars had 3 switches down there. Dimmer and a switch for overdrive where side by side. The third one was actually a pump you stepped on to squirt washer fluid on your windshield.

Wait until the key doesn't turn to start.There were several ways that worked,the easiest to find being a button on the dash.probably the hardest was on older GM trucks(maybe some cars) where there was a "Dimmer style'switch under the accelerator.You had to floor it to crank the engine.

Wow. I had no idea what he was talking about. Till someone mentioned the dimmer switch!
I was expecting to see a large hydraluc cylinder laying on the floor board.

dimmer switch on the floor and key in the dashboard, two criteria of a cool vehicle.
key on the dashboard is coming back (if you can call it a key) but the floor mounted dimmer switch is a thing of the past. |

To this day... when I jump in to my '06 Silverado I still tap my left foot... looking for the dimmer switch.
Then my brain slowly remembers to pull on the blinker doo-hickey switch arm thingy. It's the newest rig I've ever owned...Gary

I'll bet a bunch of you have never seen a seat that moves out to you and swivels to make it easier to get in. Steering wheel pivoted off to the right at the same time. You sat down and the seat slid back in, swung back to centre and the wheel locked back in the centre.
Any guesses at what car? |

The first time my son, 11 at the time, sat in the 68 he asked me how to roll the window down. As related to this thread, He thinks the dimmer switch is the coolest piece inside the truck.
