Speedo gear question
I do not have a speedo on my truck it seems the gear in the TC (221) just free spins rather then turning the cable (cable is fine and will spin the speedo with a drill on it), well i took the output cover off and the gear just sets on the shaft with no type of "key" way or anything to keep it in place.
My question is this, is this a compression fit and will taking out a shim hold it in place or am i just going to increase bearing preload. hope that makes since as there has to be something that holds this gear in place. thanks for any help |

Re: Speedo gear question
Iam going to guess that the nut that holds the yoke in place was not tight enough and that the speedo gear gets squeezed inbetween the two.?
I do not see any other way to hold that gear in place as it has no type of keyway on it. On a happy note I did fix my TC so now I have 4wd back and going.. |

bump to the top...
not a lot of guys have a working background of the 221 since it was only used for a few years.

Re: Speedo gear question
Thanks, I did get it fixed yesterday.
I put all new seals in and sealed up everything else and its nice and dry under the truck now. The speedo gear was loose and not spinning because the nut that holds the rear drive shaft yoke in place was not tight enough when I put it back together I tighten it down and the speedo now works like a champ, I guess whoever was in there last did not install it tight so they could line up the cotter pin holes and did not realize it had another one they could have used if they had got the nut tight. |
