my new /old 72
I picked up my 72 lwb on sunday. I found it local for 800.00. I must say it is rough. I bought it for a winter truck and a doner truck. I will not be getting my 70 done in time so I bought the 72. It has power disc brakes, good bumpers,4 core radiator and a good bench seat that will all go to the 70. I am interested in swaping the rear axles also. I have read that the 72's axles are 1/32 longer that the 70's will they still fit in the 70's housing?

Re: my new /old 72
actually 72 rearend will be 1.5" wider than your 70 axle, BUT pending on your 70 rear, some of the late 70 rears were the same width as the 71/72....best thing to do is measure from backing plate to backing plate to verify...just swap the 71/72 rearend in and swap that 71/72 x-member in the front of your 70 and now you have a 5 lugger

Re: my new /old 72
I would really like to just swap spindles as I have already blasted, painted and installed the x member. I would also just like to swap axle shafts only. The lmc book says the the 72 axle shaft is 1/32 (.032) longer than the 70 axle shaft. I just need to know If I can just swap the shafts?????
I will measure backing plate width tonight. Thanks, Wes |

Re: my new /old 72
Changing the spindles is fine, grab the center drag link, tie rods, and adjuster (which I assume you'll replace) and I believe you'll have to change the ball joints too....What did ya get for the measurement??.....I believe if it's the narrow 70 rear, the axles will not fit...I changed the whole rear unless there's something special about the 70 rear....Early Classic Enterprises carries the replacement axles to change to 5 lug and keep the 70 rear
This is great info that member lolife99 put together about suspension swaps....read and I hope it helps....http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=444823

Re: my new /old 72
both rear ends measure 64" from flange to flange. I will just be swaping axles. I don't think there is any plus's in swaping the whole rear ends.
