Tire load rating question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm looking at some BFG 285 75 16 All Terrains. It looks like they come with either an E or a D rating.

Going on a 3/4 4X4 to be used for mild hauling, around town driving. Probably little or no real off road. Pulling utility trailer or small trailer to haul small Kubota.

What do you guys think?

I would get the E rated ones, pretty sure they are 10ply vs the Ds at 8ply

That tire in load range D is good for 3305# at 65 psi, and LR-E is rated at 3750# at 80 psi. I would probably get the LR-D tires (that's what most of the tires have been on my K20) but it depends also on how heavy that Kubota is. I've done a lot of heavy hauling with D-rated tires, never a problem.

69GWC is right, LR-D replaces the old 8-ply rated system, and LR-E replaces 10-ply rated. But the carcasses are no longer built with 8 or 10 plies -- it's just a strength-equivelant rating system.

I always try to run E's just to Air on the side of caution. Nothing wrong with running a stronger tire
