Stock 327 Rebuild Options-Cheap!!
Needing to rebuild my stock 327 in my 68 3/4 ton.
Wanting to bump up horsepower and torque without breaking the bank. Stock rebuild in my area is about $1700. What would you do for another $300 to make it go..? Figure I would need a newer intake and camshaft just don't know what i can get away with using the stock style lifters/rockers etc. What intake would give me a few more ponies for the money? Figured I would do header regardless but instake and camshaft? Give me your thoughts....thanks,

With 2k I'd be getting a GM 350 crate motor. All brand new with 3 year warranty. Don't think you can get the same HP out of a 327 for the same money.

Depending on what heads you may have I would say get a 268H Comp cams camshaft and a performer type or rpm type manifold something in a dual plane system. That will wake up that old 327 I promise you it will . If you are ultra conservative on parts selection go one size smaller with the cam like 260 H and stay with a 600 carb with either cam choice. with a cam upgrade your probably looking at upgrading valve springs. small upcharge if that 1700 is including heads gone through? and what parts come with stock rebuild? The crate motor is a nice way to go and with the cheaper of the two you could add your upgraded intake and still be under 2k. and you can keep your numbers matching 327 if you ever wanted to restore and rebuild it then.. Good input....
Stock heads and price includes valve job and rebuild to stock. Trying to keep engine numbers matching....thinking cam and intake would be cheapest upgrade.

Re: Stock 327 Rebuild Options-Cheap!!
what does rebuilt to stock include? line hone and new rings? did the motor let go or is it just tired? If they need to bore and you need new pistons... I would tear it apart and have it checked to see if its going to be a stock rebuild or need some new parts. then talk to the engine builder about Cam recommendations since they are going to warranty it. example 14 of my 16 (previous owner had repair done) valve seats were shot in my heads. $600.00 just to get them ground out and replaced. I had valves with 8 thousands play in them. I say get an actual number in case your 2k budget is a little short. Engines are like Christmas presents. we can shake them and listen, but we never know whats inside until we open them up
good luck.

Re: Stock 327 Rebuild Options-Cheap!!
Most shops that do rebuilds can order the cam and heads that you want in the kit. You could do an RV type cam and flat top pistons. That sould give you some gains without being too hard on the other parts. Also a new intake and upgrade to HEI will make a difference for not too much money.

Re: Stock 327 Rebuild Options-Cheap!!
The engine sat for 15 plus years...couldn't turn it over even by hand (bar).
Pulled the heads and pan....looks okay but did have junk in the oil pump screen...pulled one cap on the crank and it doesn't look horrible either. Probably get away with a rebuild .30 over pistons and turn the crank....rebuild the heads and its done. Won't know about the cylinder walls until the engine is entirely broken down I guess. This truck just doesn't warrant much else.
