What color should my wheels be?

Gonna paint my wheels, should I paint them gloss white or paint them gloss black? The body is white and I was thinking about painting the bumpers black and a few other things.

Also should I keep the outer trim rings?


The wheel is mine and the truck with the camper is a pic I found on the net.

As far as I know, factory steel wheels with poverty caps were always white on trucks at least starting in 73, no matter what color the truck was. Might be some instances where they aren't, but I'd stick with white.

My truck here is unrestored and has factory 16.5 white wheels with caps and no rings. That's how it came factory even though there is nothing else white on the truck anywhere....Personally I'd think the creme color used on the center body would have been more suitable for the wheels, but that's the way GM built it, and by this point in time I don't think GM wanted to spend the time and money for body color steel wheels on every vehicle like they did back in the 60's.

You could make your decision this way.

Are you lazy about washing your wheels?

If the answer is yes then black would be the color for you...

If the answer is no then white looks great, just more work to keep clean

The truck is white, and I have a mile of dirt road to get back to my house.
So maybe black is in my future....What about the trim rings?

No dirt roads for me and I still have to wash the wheels on mine about every 3-4 times I take it out.

I'd guess black wheels might be a good choice for you then


Trim rings are personal taste. I personally like the poverty caps without trim rings for that clean uncluttered look. I even static balance my wheels so I don't have to look at the wheels weights on the outside

Trim rings on a rally style wheel is a different story though.

I did! I just think white or black wheels on a white vehicle are very boring.

I don't know, to me it says sleeper and looks good (on a truck I think it says "work truck" ). Here is an example of my bird with body color wheels, which is how they did it back then.

Too bad GM didn't follow body color on the trucks in the 70's. I think a white truck with white wheels would look better than my truck pictured above which came with white wheels. Looks outta place but that's how GM did it.

As for the rims, I say maybe a satin black with no trim rings.
Very nice truck I love the camper, I was wondering if you could share some info on it. As I'm in the market for a top for my swb.

I agree. So, I got some 16s and painted them to match the body.

i went flat black on my burb
always looks dirty- never again
did gloss black on the 78 - looks like satin
but I like the white and am going white wagons
and keeping white on the 79
no rings

This poll is not as one sided as I thought it would be.

White with rings and black with rings are almost tied.

Yeah black really doesn't look horrible. I sort of relate it more to 4x4 off road vehicles because that's where I see it the most.

I just prefer the white on mine because I'm more about keeping the factory appearance of my vehicles, and white is what GM did.

However the white wheels only look good if you keep them clean. Kind of like white letter tires. If you don't scrub them every week, they look like crap. That's why on my daily drivers I turn the white letters in, I'm not scrubbing them every 3-4 days, it's hard enough to keep a black wall,,,,black
