Smile Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Newbie in every since of the word! While I take pride in being able to do my own work, I have never, EVER attempted something of this magnitude! Been flipping through the threads and have seen a lot of great builds, tips, tricks and ideas! I look forward to sharing my progress on what has been my dream since I was 16 years old!

I found this sitting in a front yard by my FIL's house. It sat there for a year before I finally stopped to look and inquire. Structurally it is in good shape. The bed is rusting on the inside but haven't really found too much else that way. I know once I start into it, I am sure to find more. The motor is strong and the tranny doesn't slip. A/C doesn't work currently but PS and PB are all functional. This is going to be my daily driver not a show car, but I plan on putting all my skill and pride into it and completing as much of the work as I can. I'll post some more pics after I get her home tonight! :-)

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Got her home last night. Ran good after about 20 minutes. It had been sitting for almost a year so I am pretty sure the carb needs some intensive cleaning and calibrating. And I'm sure the fuel lines/tank need draining. It will stall when sitting on an incline if you don't keep some pedal to it.

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

JRanger, thanks!!! A little intimidated, just by the scope, but all set to jump in and get going on it!

TinkerMC, Too funny!!! Especially a leopard with grey and red spots! But I am ready for this one to change its' spots to Maroon and White! My daughter wants me to go with the old school Chevy blue and white. Which I do like, but I love my Tx A&M Aggies and Maroon and White it is! :-)

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Haha, Well thats the way it goes but check out my floor pan link....Im no mechanic, Im just a guy that likes to try to do it all myself and well when you see what I was doing you probably think i was a little crazy for just going all ape **** with an angle grinder... The good thing is they are solid vehicles and its hard to do too much damage to some of it as long as you dont go too nuts

Actually here

Yeah, My friends all were look at me and like "Do you know what your doing"....lol

Same here Ranger! Definitely no mechanic here! Hopefully I won't have to break out the grinder for too much!

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Rebuilt the carb. Put it on and she fired right up! No stalling when putting her in gear, no hesitation when on the pedal! First one I have rebuilt, but dang proud of myself! Especially since I am an IT geek and not a gearhead! Next on the agenda is replacing the brake booster/master cylinder and brakes. Won't know about the rotors/drums until I get the wheels off.

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Thanks!! Pretty proud of myself. Sunday, I thought I was going to have to seek reinforcements (professional help) but got it all back together on Monday and installed yesterday.

Reveille's current status:

Motor/Ignition - stable, needs tuning, but stable
Trans - drained/filter replaced and refilled - linkage needs some work but stable
Brakes - booster is shot, replace it and MC as well as all pads/shoes and bleed, possibly other issues but that is the place to start.
A/C - Haven't began to look at yet - Currently non-functional
Body - Not on the horizon yet

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Got the brakes replaced and bled. Even after getting a notice from the local PD that someone complained because she was on stands for a day. Really? Anyway, still having brake issues. Have ordered a new booster and master cylinder which should be in tomorrow. Having issues with the parking brake too. It won't hold. Pulled the rear wheels/drums off last night to inspect and did find a few pieces that may have slipped while I was installing. Fixed those but same issue. Cables pull the lever, but apparently aren't pulling tight enough. I'm going to go through the cables this weekend and tighten where I can. Any other thoughts?

Really want to get her inspected and at least road worthy. Also have to adjust the timing. She diesels after shutdown. I have done a full tune/carb replacement. Before that she wouldn't even hardly start. So I am pretty sure I got that part right. Thinking about running a can or two of seafoam through her to see if that helps as well to break up any buildup in the intake.

I know! He drove by shaking his head again yesterday! So it had to be him! Especially since I had her jacked up again looking at the parking brakes!

until you get time to fix the issue cut the engine power with it in gear and it will stop.

Thanks Tinker! That is exactly what I am doing. Of course have to get the brake issue fixed first! :-)

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Worked on the e-brake saturday. Ended up having to clean - de-rust the cables where it went from the frame to the rear drums. After doing that she holds great. Even under close to full throttle. Also worked on the timing. Still not sure I have it right, but she definitely runs better. Only issue I am having now is that when she is cold and you have her in gear, she backfires through the carb a bit until she is warmed up. Still have a bit of a dieseling issue too, but not near as bad as it was.

Is that all the local PD has to do? Looks like a beauty to me!

Apparently! LOL! Now I make sure to move her a few times a week if I haven't driven her yet. Although I plan to get her inspected this weekend.

Re: Newbie Here - My first project - Reveille!

Replaced the brake booster, master cylinder and bled the brakes last night. Thanks all for the great advice on a separate post regarding bench bleeding the MC. Brakes are working great again!

Now on to the power steering pump and then the AC.
