What is integral power steering?

In ordering a new steering box, I see I have the choice of "integral" power steering vs power steering. The pictures look the same.

Can someone tell me what the difference is so I order the right thing for my '702 402 C20 Longhorn?

Re: What is integral power steering?

How to I.D. Your 1968-69 Power Steering System:
Integral System: Power steering pump is connected to the steering gear by
two hoses. Linkage System: Power steering pump hoses connect to the control valve,
not the steering gear.

I'm guessing being a 70 I must have integral?

Re: What is integral power steering?

Dave, Your truck would have the intergral P/S setup. Easy to confirm by two hoses running from the pump to the box. The ram assist has lots of parts, hoses and leaks. the only pictures I have are of a '67 K10 with a plow frame so the background is really busy but it still gives a feel. If you have seen the setup in a third gen. 'vette, that is a ram assist system.

Re: What is integral power steering?

Thanks! That (the non-integral) looks like an engineering mistake :-) Though I can see where ram-assist would be handy with big tires or a snow plow, that sort of thing.

I'm going to see if I can get a quote for Redhead to rebuild my current unit rather than buying a new one. Replace is usually cheaper than rebuild, but I'm trying to keep as much original as I can...
