fan heat probes

do all probes that fit either in your radiator fins or the manifold have 2 prongs and just one prong gets power form the ing then the other gets ground?

Re: fan heat probes

The fan circuit is grounded when the sensor switch closes at the prescribed temp.

Re: fan heat probes

I normally use a switch from a late 80's/early 90's Camaro. It goes into the intake mainfold near the thermostat, it is 3/8 pipe thread. I will look and try to find the part number. Mine kicks the fan on at 205 and off at 187 according to the OEM specs. I bought mine from O'Reilly's here with the pigtail.

the only single terminal I am aware of are temp sensors that install in the block or intake, somewhere in a cooling passage, they take their ground from the mount and output variable resistance.

what you are using is a thermo switch, a bi metal strip in the switch bends as it heats up and closes the contact between the two pins. its usually used to turn on a relay, not directly to a fan, one side gets grounded and the other side goes to the trigger side of a relay. I havent ever seen a single terminal thermo switch, maybe they exist, but it wont install in the coils of the radiator.

Re: fan heat probes

Joe- you are exactly right, I called what I use a switch because to me that is what it does, but it is a temp sensor that grounds the relay for the fan. I should have had a few more cups of coffee before posting this morning. Sorry if I confused anyone.

Re: fan heat probes

This is a Murray 35946 called a cooling fan switch- popular on alot of 90's GM products.

I used a BWD TFS5 which is the same appearance.

Painless offers a kit (about 60 bones)...fans on @ 205/off 185, or on 185/off 165. The kit includes the relay, circuit/ braker, & complete instuctions. Works like a champ! crazyL
