Another New guy With a budget build.

Finally posting my build. I bought this bad boy about three months ago, it might have been an impulse buy (lack of judgment) but I have been looking forward to buying one for two deployments now… The PO had it painted and lined the tub, it looks like it has had some cheep body work done as well. I will deal with the corrosion if and when it pops through. Came with a 350, headers (Cracked), Edelbrock intake manifold and carb.

I just bought a Pair of Flowtech headers and they rub on the cross member. I only need ¾ of an inch to make them fit perfect so I looked at my motor mounts and they are about 30 years over due. I’m hoping that provides the clearance needed or it will be rub down time for the headers. Next its the Exhaust, I want it to exit before the rear tires It seems like a short distance to add the mufflers and an H pipe but we will see. Well I figured I would stop creeping on the forums and post something. Any one in the San Diego area?

I think I have decided on my exhaust system, but there are a few things I have questions about. The kit on summitracing SUM-671250 says it’s a 3” diameter but the tail pipe is 2.5”. I’m assuming (ass out of you and me ) lol that the .5 decrease is for the muffler. I want to get the summit street rod mufflers SUM-638222 that are 2.5 in/out if the pipe is three inches into the muffler would a reducer work for the muffler connection? If the pipes go back to three inches after the muffler (unlikely) will that hurt the sound/efficiency? I’m trying to stick with the summit system because its cheap and from what I have been reading quality stuff. I plan on swapping a LS1 or LT1 in down the road and I will have to redo everything anyways.

first off, please go LS1 over LT1!

once you change down to 2.5" there really isn't a point in going back up to 3, it just costs more to go back and forth like that. Can't say anything about the summit kits in particular since I've never had any experience with them, but while you're in there you should look at cut-outs behind the headers

Yeah I'm not planning on buying a three 3in after the muffler it might come with the kit... I dont want a bottle neck type of deal. I'm waiting on the summit guys do an inspection on the kit and see what the deal is. The rep thinks it might be a web site typo.

I got sick of waiting for my parts from Summit so I started pulling out the old exhaust. Almost every bolt broke when I tried to loosen them .
As I was doing this the UPS man pulled up with my parts or at least half of them. I ordered a Dual Exhaust and two mufflers and got my dual exhaust and one muffler. Needless to say I gave summit a call and told them, they upgraded my shipping to two day air for free even though I live in San Diego and it gets here in two days by ground lol. I went with the long tube headers (not here yet) and I'm already starting to regret it. I need a 6-8 inch off set to clear the cross member that holds the transfer case on the passenger side. If I would have went with mids or I think the 2nd get Camero headers Like someone on the forum was suggesting I wouldn't need anything else Ahh I wish learning didnt have to be so expensive!!! I will post more details so future "I can figure it out guys" dont run into the same thing. That hack saw sucked lol

Let me know how those mufflers sound. I put the thrush equivalents in but in 3" with a turn out in front of the rear wheels. Its too loud for me.

So I finally got the headers and exhaust in... The new headers are alot shorter then the ones being replaced which was Awesome! I drove it to the hobby shop with just the headers on, lol I got alot of disapproving looks

I would recommend wrapping your headers before putting them in to avoid scratches. It will make returning them easier if they dont work out.

I bought a 2.5 mandrel bent kit but decided to go the 3in route. haha I was asking around for a six inch off set and this guy was like o yeah I have a bunch of 3in mandrel and totally hooked me up! I had 2.5 mufflers so needless to say some fab work was in order. Thanks to Joe and his know how I learned alot and got the exhaust all hooked up.

@Ole beater the mufflers are just right for me. My tub is lined so it probably quiets it down at least a couple Dbs.

No updates as far as progress goes! I do have a question tho how do I tell if my Blazer has a after market CAM? Some guy today was swearing up and down I had one and he could tell just by listening to the idle. Anyone know How I can figure it out for sure with out tearing apart my engine? O and I found a 14 bolt rear for $250 good deal?

Even if you pulled the motor apart, it's still not easy to tell what type of cam you have. A stock cam at idle purrs without much (if any at all) bump. Typically, the more aggresive the cam, the more bump there is at idle. I can't say about the cost of the 14 bolt, but if it has a posi/locker in it, I would think so...

Ok ol beater they are now to loud for me. I cant use speaker phone in the truck now and I can bearly hear the gate gaurds getting on base lol. All my texas friends like it tho.

Haha, Think im going to have to waste some more money and build a 2 1/2" exhaust setup from the headers back. Although i am impressed with how well they are holding up. Theyve been on the truck for several months now with no signs of rust.

Thinking about a possible trade. The body on my truck is so clean I feel kind of bad throwing a role cage in it and cutting wheel wells. Any one have a more appropriate rig they want to work a deal on?
